I've bought a bajillion "first uke" books, and too many either jump in too fast, don't have good exercises, or think a single page on reading notes is enough for people with no musical background (ie. plenty of new uke players).

This book is fantastic, and it the one my tutor uses. My only recommendation is, if you're planning on learning sheet music instead of just tabs, put a couple strips of masking tape over the tabulature- that way you won't be distracted by the tabs while actively playing, but you can still read them if you look close enough.
