Product Review (submitted on August 2, 2016):
I waited more than a year to post this review because, for most of that time, I felt let down. My MGT has always had a nice sound, but "nice" doesn't really do the trick when one steps up to a well-made, solid wood ukulele, even if it's not a a K-brand built in Hawaii.
On various sites on the web, I found reviews that indicated Pono ukuleles are nice, but overbuilt. Having bought and sold a couple of overbuilt guitars, I guessed that was the situation with my Pono, even with HMS's spot-on setup.
I was wrong.
As is often the case, the key was finding the right strings for the ukulele and my ear -- with emphasis on the latter, understanding how subjective this subject is.
After a few of the more commonly recommended sets, I strung up a set of Martin M620 (tenor) strings, and all I can say is Wow! It was like flipping switch. I don't know if it's the material (fluorocarbon) or the gauge and tension, but those strings coaxed a woody tone from this ukulele that is at once rich and delicate. Two months later, I still cannot get over how good it sounds and how much pleasure I get from playing it.
Others may disagree about strings, but one thing is clear: Pono makes a fine ukulele with the bonus of an affordable price.
