The Hawaiian-made tenor pictured is "the one" now available! (If it says "In Stock".)

This is a new limited edition Kanile'a model. This ukulele is special in many ways and has a deep message behind it.

The Maoli No was born out of a commitment Kanile'a has made to the reforestation of Hawaii and protection of the environment. Maoli No means "truly native” and this ukulele was made using the dead fall of endemic Hawaiian hardwoods. The fragrant `iliahi, abundant`ōhi`a lehua and prized koa make up the body, neck and key features of this stunning instrument. No live tree was cut and it was made by Kanile`a in a carbon-neutral process through Hawai`i Legacy Hardwoods' Legacy Carbon program. This innovative program offers certified carbon credits for the permanent reforestation of koa.

The rosette inlay uses Kailua Beach white sand and says He ali`i ka `āina; he kauā ke kanaka, which means “The land is Chief; man is its servant”. This is an ancient Hawaiian saying and the wisdom behind it is what helped them survive for many years in the worlds most isolated islands. Sand was also used for the fretboard markers which are kahili (a symbol of the Hawaiian aliʻi chiefs signifying power from the divinities), and are shown with two crossed hoe paddles.

The idea and design of this ukulele is something we are proud to share with you. It reminds us of the importance of our land and signifies sustainability of our resources for future generations in a beautiful way. Plus, the tone!!

Our sound samples are completely dry and we are dedicated to showing true tone. Use quality speakers or headphones for the most accurate listening.

We interviewed Joe at NAMM 2016 when they released this model-

In 2014, Kanile`a `Ukulele acquired a tract of native Hawaiian forest in Kona, Hawai`i. After an assessment of the property, 38 native Hawaiian species of flora were identified including hardwoods like koa (Hawaiian Acacia), `ōhi`a lehua (Hawaiian Myrtle), lama (Hawaiian Ebony) and understory plants such as `iliahi ( Hawaiian Sandalwood), mamaki, ko`oko`olau, naio, māmane, kōlea and ferns. Understanding their responsibility of stewardship for this land, Kanile`a `Ukulele locked arms with the National Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and Hawaiian Legacy Reforestation Initiative (HLRI) to better learn how to protect and propagate these native species. Through these organizations, Kanile`a `Ukulele is able to provide seeds for propagation and replanting in other areas thus aiding in restoring the native Hawaiian forests all over Hawai`i Island.

For each Maoli Nō sold with the Makana o Maoli Nō reforestation project, a koa tree along with an understory tree will be planted. The owner of the `ukulele will be given an authentic Certificate of Planting that will list the exact set of geographical coordinates per tree. These plants can then be located using GPS tracking applications online like Google Earth.

Beyond all of its totally unique features, this is just an awesome looking and sounding ukulele. It sounds big and warm and projects with power. It feels perfect and this one is actually the very first to get made so it makes it that much more special. Don't hesitate to add this amazing instrument to your collection!
