Details

This solid mahogany concert from the Kala company is patterned after the classic Martin mahogany concert ukulele. Kala truly did an excellent job with this SMH line. This concert has a very warm, classic tone that pleases the ears.

Mahogany continues to be used despite being harder to find and more expensive. This is a wood that has been used for stringed instruments for the last century because it has soft and hard wood qualities to it with excellent sonic character. The SMHC not only sounds good, it looks good! The bindings are very precisely routed for, quality wood with clean construction, and the design and adornment is tasteful.

This is the Kala KA-SMHC. They recently re-voiced it and this concert size uke is one of the best on the market now!

We are behind a bench making ukes like this one play and feel great every single day. We truly set up each instrument to ensure you get the absolute best for your money! This includes Saddle and Nut heights, Fret work (usually planing or "dressing"), intonation checks, and a thorough inspection for cosmetic flaw. This is crucial for this middle price range where you can really get close to a high end concert feel from our work. No one is more qualified than our crew to do these final adjustments, and unlike your normal retail shop, we aren't afraid to dig in and do some real work for our customers! We are also dedicated to giving you honest and expert service and advice. Aloha!

This uke is far from that "plinky" cheap concert sound. Not only does it sound good now, but being solid wood, it will just continue to become more resonant and warm. If you were looking for a concert around 200 dollars this should model from Kala would come strongly recommended by us!

We always include a humidifier with solid wood instruments. This is not an option, and we do not charge for it.

Setup Options

Most people shop with us because of the extensive quality control and final setup work we provide at no extra cost on all ukuleles we ship out. However this is time consuming work and creates a delay in shipping. We are now offering an "Expedited Setup" for those wanting to receive their instrument faster. See details on the Full Setup and Expedited Setup options along with current turnaround times for each at the link- HERE.

When you buy this ukulele you can get a UkeCrazy gig bag or canvas covered hard case at an additional discount. (Not required but suggested.) The UkeCrazy gig bag and canvas-covered hardcase can be seen in our cases category under the Accessories tab at the top of this page. Other cases can also be chosen there.

One of the options for this ukulele is to trade out the Herco HE-360, included humidifier, for the more expensive Oasis Ukulele Humidifier (OH-18) at a discount. This is required if you live in a low humidity area.(parts of California, Nevada, Arizona, etc..) or also areas with winter seasons, especially if you are heating the air in your house. For more info refer to the ukulele care link at the bottom of this page. If you think you need to humidify the instrument, then you also need a hard case for a humidifier to properly work, and you need to maintain the humidifier by refilling it as needed.

Put a note in the special instructions if you need to or would like to let our setup or shipping department know anything.

After adding this instrument to your cart, you can still create your own package by adding a case or accessories from the website.

Under the accessories tab you can also customize this instrument by adding strap button(s) or your choice of pickup for plugging in.

Beautiful, resonant sound with just the right amount of brightness
After spending an hour or two in the ukulele store strumming on different ukes, I kept coming back to the Kala KA-SMHC because of its rich, resonant sound, mixed with some of the brightness I really like in a ukulele. Beautiful sound, nice-looking and light weight instrument. Easy to play, and the Nylgut strings feel good to the fingers. All in all, I'm thoroughly satisfied with this sweet little uke.

Great value
I purchased this uke with the misi accoustic trio installed. I have had it for a few months, and I love it. The sound is consistent when I am plugged in and when I am not. The setup of the instrument was perfect. No buzz and all frets are smooth. The price with hard case and pickup installation was less than my Martin soprano. The tone and quality is equal to that instrument.

Starter uke for my daughter in grade school
My daughter's elementary school teaches ukulele to all the kids (she started around 7 yrs old in 2011). The recommended uke from the teacher is a Kala KA-C, setup with Low-G. I wanted to get her something with HMS's well regarded setup. As luck would have it, the KA-C was in short supply that year in the fall so I moved up to the solid wood model. There is just a tiny bit more ornamentation on the KA-SMHC which my daughter appreciates as it sets her uke apart, but not *too much* apart from the other kids.

The uke is very resonant and ringing despite being a concert size and is well suited for her size (but as an adult male I have no trouble playing it as well). The intonation is spot on and with HMS's setup, there is no buzz anywhere on the fret board. The frets are all nicely finished with no burrs or rough spots. Tuning is accurate and easy, but lacks the precision feel of a high-end K-brand uke (but that's no surprise considering that this is a fifth of the price). My daughter is in her second year of using this uke and it is still perfect.

Great starter concert uke!
This was my first ukulele and while I did not know what size would work for me I did have a guitar background and knew that a solid uke would be of higher quality than a laminate wood build. This uke sounds great for the price and grew my love for the instrument. I bought a kamaka hf-3 within a couple of years. I still love my Kala and bring it with me on my travels.
