It took 60 years for Gretsch to get back into it, but they have truly brought an amazing value to the market with their new ukulele line-up. A cool vintage vibe and a beautiful ring. I absolutely love them and know you will too!

Gretsch ukes from the 40's and 50's are well known for having excellent tone and construction. WIth their new production they have copied their classic look, and voiced them like you rarely find at this affordable price . After our setup work,  this tenor is unbeatable!

Corey gives us a "dry" sound sample. We use transparent audio recording equipment and are dedicated to showing true tone.

Note: there is a vintage style "handmade" look to these "Roots Series" models from Gretsch. The aesthetic is often less than perfect. Rest assured, we reject any medium to major blemishes, but if you look hard enough you will see slight differences in shade for small areas of the stained mahogany and they sometimes show slight sandpaper brushes under the finish at parts, both of which you can see this in the pictures if you look for it. This is also common in their vintage ukes though and for many, part of this models charm. We mention it though to say, this model isn't for those looking an ukulele that is cosmetically flawless. However, we choose to offer it for a reason. It's a good sounding tenor with a retro look at a very affordable price.

To have the most fun you need an ukulele that has been set up to be it's best.  Our team truly works on these instruments so that they play like they just came from a custom shop in Hawaii. (because they did).

This model is popular and, while we try to keep it in stock, we often sell out before more are available, act now to get this fine quality tenor with our custom setup!

Loving it
This is my second ukulele. I have a soprano first and I decided to upgrade. This tenor uku sounds beautiful! Great resonance. And thanks HMS for the set up, they've done it really fast :)

Above its class!
This is one of the best ukes you will ever find at this price point. For the past year this has been my go-to instrument that I know will be consistent. I don't worry about leaving it in the car or injuring it like I would with one of my more expensive ukes. If you are looking for a laminate that will compete with your friends' solid body models, this is the one.

relieved
All other reviews are collectively accurate so anything I add would just be white noise. I want to thank HMS's crew for completing my order before Christmas. I didn't think it would even be possible as i ordered it on the 19th and it was here on the 24th. A Christmas miracle in my little world, as I had just returned 2 previous ukes from another site as they were both inadequate. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Maybe this will help other buyers on this particular model. If you are a beginner this ukulele will blow your mind, intermediate you will love it (for the price) expert, a great travel uke. Big sound, small price.

Thanks Corey for playing all those ukes under 200.

Great Ukulele and Great Staff!
I'm really glad I bought my ukulele through this site and not Amazon! The set up was great and worth the wait! Zach was very helpful and responded to my email inquiries with patience. He was great to work with and told me when my ukulele left the island. I was afraid my ukulele wouldn't make it before my lessons, but it made it just in time!

My friends (fellow ukulele and guitar players) really love how the Gretsch sounds and complimented the setup. One of my friends got his uke through Amazon and his fretboard was chipped. My Gretsch is well-loved and will be used for many years. Thanks, HMS!

Rings Like A Bell!
What a wonderful Ukulele! For a laminate, it has perfect intonation, great volume up to maybe the 7th or 8th fret, and the set up done on it is a work of art!

The only thing to be aware of is its thick neck. It has an old school "C" shape neck versus some of the narrow options out there. If you can deal with that, the sound is phenomenal!

Great Ukee!
I play Medieval / Renaissance replica instruments, and decided to get a ukulele because the tuning is familiar.
After hearing quite a few models, I chose the Gretsch 9120.
It has a very mellow tone, and with the use of gut-like strings (or regular strings gently sanded with 400 grt), has an even more natural sound.
I do my own setups, and can't stress enough how important it is to have it done properly, especially if you play a more delicate 'lute' style, intonation is critical.
IMO, the Gretsch 9120 is also the best looking of all the comparable models.

surpassed expectations
I had a budget of less than 200.00 and looked at MANY different makes and models. Nothing came close to this tendor for pure musical tone. I have owned it for a month and it is only better. Build quality is very good as well. This is worth a lot more than the asking price.

Way exceeded my expectations!
At age 62, I decided it was time to learn to play a musical instrument. I wanted something that was relatively easy to learn to play (I checked with several music teachers), small enough to carry on a plane, and would be fun to play. After a couple of weeks of research - both online and in stores as well as with musicians, including ukulele players - I decided on a tenor uke. All of the players said that having a uke setup correctly was critical. Hawaii Music Supply's website said that all of their instruments - even less expensive ones - were setup. I finally decided on the Gretsch 9120 and ordered it along with a hard case, an Oahu clip-on tuner and an extra set of strings. With delivery, the cost was around right around $200. About a week later the uke was delivered.
After 6 weeks, it has exceeded my expectations! The uke stays in tune requiring only minor tuning when I take it out of the case. The case is solid and the tuner is incredibly accurate. Other uke players have commented on how well it was set up and how good it sounds.
I play 2 to 3 hours a day and could not be happier with my choice of the 9120 and HMS. One day I hope to be in Hawaii and thank HMS personally.
All the best for 2014!

I really enjoy playing my Gretsch.
I really enjoy playing my Gretsch 9120.
The intonation on the Gretsch is excellent. On mine, I have a ding in on the 10th fret of the G string. So, that D is a little hard to play. However, I regularly play all way to the 12th fret and it sounds clear and clean all the way there.
In comparison to more expensive ukuleles it is not loud. However, that was a plus for me. In the time that I have owned my Gretsch it has opened up to be a fuller brighter sound. This happened when I started tuning with tuning folks instead of electric tuners. So, I do not know if it is a results of me learning to tune my instrument better of whether is has to do with the wood opening up by using a tuning folk. In either case that instrument has the potential to have these full beautiful bell like tones.
I live in the Philippines, where we have 6% humidity in the dry season followed immediately with 94% humidity. The change wreaks havoc on all instruments here. So, even though the Gretsch 9120 has a plywood body, I would still recommend using a humidity control system in your case. You are going to love this instrument and of course you are going to want to protect it.
One of the best experiences about buying this ukulele from Hawaiian Ukulele Supply is that they had a beginnerโ€™s package that they offered me. It had a Uke Crazy Case and a book called Play Ukulele Today. I am really thankful to the sales person for directing me to it, because I really enjoyed learning from this book. I had learned a lot from the Internet, but the book filled in a lot of the information that I was missing.
I tried a low G on the Gretsch and went back to the high G. It sound much better with the high G. This instrument is not meant to play with a low G. If you want a low G tuning buy a more robust instrument. The tuners are not strong enough and the body is not strong enough for the low G string even if you are using Aquila Red strings. The Gretsch really sings with the high G tuning. It is designed for it. With the high G tuning it produces an angelic sound.
The Gretsch 9120 has a plywood body. The fret makers are painted on. On my Gretsch there are rough spots on the neck where it was not buffed out properly. None of this affects the playability of the instrument. If you want a solid body you are looking for the Gretsch 9120 SM. The SM also has the beautiful inlayed fret markers.

Beautiful
Having played on a cheap soprano for a few months now, this is a significant step up in terms of tone and quality of build, and with the set up by HMS, sounds simply sublime (even in my hands!)

Great Ukulele
The ukulele is fantastic. The set-up done by HMS made my choice of ukulele and buying at HMS the clear winner. I have a 72 Gretsch guitar and knew I wanted to see how their ukuleles turned out. I made the right choice. Ukulele and HMS.

Paypal screwed up my address, but Andrew made sure it came to the right address. I was worried, but HMS staff made me feel assured they would get it to me.

Now I have to choose a concert size for my wife. So many to choose from. I don't see a Gretsch in laminate. It took me a couple weeks to decide on the Gretsch I guess it will take a while to find the right one for my wife.

Thanks to everybody at HMS.

Great Uke!
I've been wanting to try a tenor for a while. Wasn't sure if my small hands could adjust to the larger scale and didn't want to break the bank experimenting. I'm glad I did it!
Pros: Wonderful set up with low G from HMS . Nice classic look. Well made, cleanly constructed. Excellent intonation throughout. Nice resonant sound. OK gig bag was a tight squeeze at first, but loosened up. Good uke for the porch or to not worry about when you leave it in the car for 10 minutes.
Cons: can't think of any, other than my purchase of a solid wood tenor might be put off for a while...

My first ukulele
I purchased my first (and only) uku this past Oct. after doing a bit of research and found out everything I heard on the net said go to HMS. From my first contact I knew this was the place to buy a Ukulele. Everyone was fantastic to deal with. The staff never tried to up sell me and at one time told I didn't need something I was going buy. I purchased a tenor Gretsch that I have fallen in love with. Can not say enough good things you guys. Happy New Year, and great success in it. Ed Smith

Excellent First Uke
For a laminate tenor, the Gretsch is a nice instrument.

It doesn't have the clarity, richness, loudness, or sustain of a solid wood uke, but it is still excellent. I actually prefer the Gretsch over my solid wood tenor, because the action and ease of play is a lot nicer on the Gretsch, and the drop in sound quality is not really noticeable to me, unless they are played together.

The build quality is excellent. The finish is attractive, with a nice rosette around the sound hole.

HMS set it up perfectly. The action is easy, the frets are nicely set and finished, and there is no buzzing.

This would make an excellent first ukulele, or a nice uke for someone wanting to try a tenor who is on a tight budget.

NICE!!!!
I was looking for an inexpensive tenor that I can play anytime without worrying about the outdoor environment - humidity, sea air, kids, dogs, well-meaning friends. I saw the Gretsch on this site and figured, what the heck - I can't go wrong for the price specially with the free set-up offered. I received my ukulele with a set-up low and I think they dressed the frets as there was still some dust on the fretboard. The intonation (a pet peeve of mine) is dead on up and down the fretboard. I change the strings to Worth clears and it sounds sweet. Although not load as the solid tops I have, it is a great value for the price. It is now part of the rotation with my other ukuleles when I kanikapila with friends or rehearse with my group.

Great sound and value
I'm a beginner uke player. Last year I bought a $30 soprano at a junk store and was hooked. When I decided it was time to move up, I spent a lot of time on the Ukulele Site listening to the different ukes in my price point and comparing them to the high dollar ukes. I was amazed at the rich-sounding tone of this one. If only I could play it as beautifully as the guy playing it on the site! It comes with a decent canvas case, and after having it a week, I realized something was in the pocket of the case. HMS had included extra strings and a strap!

My experience with HMS was great from start to finish and I will definitely do business with them in the future.

Great Value & Great Service
I love my new Uke! This Gretsch has a simple and very nice look to it. The sound is fantastic for a instrument of this price. The final setup done by HMS really does make a difference.

I was fortunate to buy my Uke in the store on the north shore. Andrew and Aaron were great to deal with. They suggested and sold me the Uke that was right for me. We went back to see live music in the parking lot on Thursday night. Andrew even pointed us in the direction of some more good local music.

If I am ever fortunate to find myself on Oahu again, I will buy my next Uke form The Ukulele Site store. If not, I will definitely buy it from their online store.

Great Value
I decided on the Gretsch Tenor for my first ukulele, after weeks of comparing many different models. But for the value, especially for a first ukulele, I think I made an excellent choice. I'm very happy with this uke. The look & feel are excellent. The tone is very nice, warm & smooth.

I did purchase it the Worth low-G brown strings. But it came with clear strings instead. That was a little disappointing, But hey, for this price & package & other setup, I really can't complain. Instead, I should learn how to re-string a ukulele.

I have no doubt that in a couple years I'll be coming back here to get a solid wood ukulele. I love this site for all the descriptions, reviews, and the ability to listen to the instruments. Thank you, HMS!
