This is my third "K" brand uke. I also have a Kamaka Tenor and a Ko'Aloha Concert. I have a Pono Mahogany Soprano, but wanted to upgrade. This instrument feels very solid. The mahogany neck, though thinner than some instruments, feels very substantial, but not too heavy - when you pick it up, you know you are not handling a cheap toy. I also love the 1.5" wide neck, makes chording and fingerpicking easier than some sopranos. Satin finish on the Koa body is plainer than a gloss, but I love the conservative natural look which shows off the natural beauty and grain of the Koa - it is butter smooth to touch though. Abalone dot inlays, fretboard and top, are cool, but don't scream "look at me!". Just understated class. Tone and intonation spot-on. Engraved fancy Grover geared tuners are a joy. The pin bridge design is different than the tie-on traditional, thought it would bother me, but it is growing on me - though haven't changed out the Aquila strings yet - don't plan to at this time as they sound great. Instrument sounds awesome w great projection and forever-lasting sustain. I wondered whether I would be disappointed and think my Pono was just as nice - I'm not. The Kanile'a is at a whole different level (though I still love the Pono, and someone is getting it for Christmas!). HMS customer service and shipping is the best. Third uke from them, and Joel and Andrew are always available to answer questions, make sure your experience is awesome, and ensure that you are happy w your purchase. Don't see a lot of reviews for the basic soprano Kanile'a on the internet,so thought I would post this. Don't hesitate to check it our if you are looking for a high-end soprano that laughs at shiny gloss and inlays, but just "walks the walk" in performance and quality workmanship.
