The sound and feel of this Pono mango baritone (MGB) is a great example of the quality and value in the Pono line.

This mango was quartersawn cut, dried properly, and then built in a climate-controlled environment. Reinforced with a lightweight, dual-action, adjustable truss rod for long term stability and adjustment capabilities.

One of the best 0 people found this helpfulI said "one of the best" assuming that one day I will find a better one.

Sweet sounding bari took awhile to warm up, but really glad it did! 0 people found this helpfulThis is my second uke from HMS - immaculately shipped (as always), it arrived in perfect condition. However, after a week I was on the fence about keeping it so I contacted customer service at HMS -- they very nicely sent me two new strings to try out. Now a month or two of regular playing later the mango tonewood has really started opening up. Its unique sound is soft, halfway between sweet and dark with lasting overtones if you get the tuning just right. The dimensions are spot on, and while it lacks the umpf of other bari's I've tried it excels as a mellow backdrop when singing. I was hoping my MGB would have a pattern similar to the pictures on the website, but it doesn't. It is much, much lighter with striations of darker coffee coloring throughout. Overall a unique, quality instrument that improves every time I play.

I'd buy this uke a thousand times over 0 people found this helpfulSounds beautiful. The notes almost have a slightly dissonant undertone to them which makes the music from this instrument feel comforting and warm in major, or deeply dissonant and unsettling in minor. For $400, I would buy this uke a thousand times over. I was originally considering the acacia analog to this one, but mango was the much better choice in so far as tonewood. Also, I personally don't like a glossed body, so the fact that the matte finish on this model was also cheaper? Definitely a fan of that.

Classic. Sweet. Perfectly sized baritone 0 people found this helpfulA belated review because I actually bought the MGB nearly 4 months ago from HMS. First, out of the box I felt it lacked the punch of some other baritones I've played. After a few days I put on some D'adarrio Pro Arte Tenor strings and it warmed up nicely. Now I can't get enough of the sweet warm sound of the mango. Besides the sound, I also really like the dimensions of Pono baritones. I bought a new Kamaka Bari a few years ago and still find it to be clunky and oversized. Too much of a good thing. I also have a 1980s Kamaka baritone. These have a slightly smaller body and shorter scale. I love the old Kamaka baritones for sound and playability and the Pono baritones are similar in size to the old Kamakas. Very pleasantly surprised at how much I like this mango baritone! Joel's setup is also sweet and made it comfortable to play right out of the box.
