Pono MGT - Mango Tenor

Quarter Sawn Solid Mango Wood - Smooth Satin Lacquer Finish.

Pictures show the exact instrument available here. The video shows the same model.

Pono is a line from the Ko'olau company that makes high-end custom ukes here on the island. The Pono is a more affordable version with the same specs and build as the Ko'olau. They really stand out in the ukulele market for their quality and value. The Mango wood gives a sweet tone just like the fruit it produces. It has warmth and clarity similar to the best characteristics found in both mahogany and koa.

Along with great sounds, this new mango line features beautiful, exotic looks and variations in the wood grain that will bring you joy to just hold and admire. Only a few have arrived so don't miss this opportunity to be among the first to experience this wonderful new model.

A key feature in all of the Pono tenors and baritones is the dual-action adjustable truss rod. This stabilizes and adjusts the lengthwise forward curvature (also called relief), of the neck. It can be adjusted from right inside the sound hole with an allen wrench provided. Over time and with humidity changes, this is a very useful option to have, and a very easy thing to adjust with little room for error.

Rich, clear, sweet tones, great sustain with Ko'olau Aho low G smooth-wound string set. The sound quality is what you'd expect from a custom instrument costing much, much more. Unbeatable value.

This is an upgrade from the mahogany tenor I bought while in Maui last May. That was my first ever uke, a fine tenor with a low G as I wanted a more guitar-like sound. Four months later I had a hankering for a higher pitched uke. I thought I might want to try a concert uke. I came across the Ukulele Review, which really helped me to narrow my search. Luckily I found some of the recommendations at a guitar store, like Kala, Luna, Cordoba, Mitchell, both concert and tenor. I realized a tenor would still suit me better, so perhaps a high G would work. Still, I wasn’t satisfied with what they had at the store. So then I found the Ukulele Site - such a smorgasborg of fantastic sounding ukes! I was especially drawn to the mango tenors, like Pono's Pro Classic Mango Tenor and others of that caliber, only they were beyond my budget. After much research I decided to take a gamble ordering online. I decided to get Pono MGT as it sounded like a great bang for your buck, and I’m so glad I did! I do prefer to try an instrument before I buy so I had a little bit of anxiety (eventually eclipsed by excitement) about what I would get, and just placed my trust in the videos, reviews, and reputation of Pono makers, Ukulele Review and Ukulele Site/Hawaii Music Supply folks. I'm so glad that my gamble paid off! I received a beautiful Pono MGT, lighter colored than what’s pictured. I may not be a luthier, but I am an artist and I can tell impeccable craftsmanship when I see, hear and feel it. The MGT is bright and crisp, resonant and so much fun to play each day. The videos do not do it justice (though still helped a lot, so kudos to Aaron and Corey). It sounds even better in your hands! It's great for strumming and especially fingerpicking, which really touches my soul. Now I understand why my brother collects guitars. Each one becomes special in their own way. This just might be start of my own ukulele collection. :) As it turns out, within a month, the MGT went out of stock, so I’m so happy I got one just in time! Thanks, HMS! You guys rock!!! Ordering online was very easy. Andrew was very helpful and answered my questions on email/phone. At the last minute I added a case to my existing order (which I also enjoy), and Andrew made that process seamless. I could really tell there was meticulous care in setup and packaging. I even got calls on the day UPS was dropping off my package to my workplace. Zach and Ashley wanted to make sure I received it just fine, and what a joyous day when I did!

I waited more than a year to post this review because, for most of that time, I felt let down. My MGT has always had a nice sound, but "nice" doesn't really do the trick when one steps up to a well-made, solid wood ukulele, even if it's not a a K-brand built in Hawaii. On various sites on the web, I found reviews that indicated Pono ukuleles are nice, but overbuilt. Having bought and sold a couple of overbuilt guitars, I guessed that was the situation with my Pono, even with HMS's spot-on setup. I was wrong. As is often the case, the key was finding the right strings for the ukulele and my ear -- with emphasis on the latter, understanding how subjective this subject is. After a few of the more commonly recommended sets, I strung up a set of Martin M620 (tenor) strings, and all I can say is Wow! It was like flipping switch. I don't know if it's the material (fluorocarbon) or the gauge and tension, but those strings coaxed a woody tone from this ukulele that is at once rich and delicate. Two months later, I still cannot get over how good it sounds and how much pleasure I get from playing it. Others may disagree about strings, but one thing is clear: Pono makes a fine ukulele with the bonus of an affordable price.

I'm a guitar player with some nice handmade guitars and knew I didn't want my first ukulele to feel like it was anything less than a real musical instrument. Aaron understood my situation and guided me to several models I settled on the mango, and i've enjoyed it every day since. I won't repeat all the superlatives bestowed upon the staff and the business model and the instruments themselves, I'll just leave it to say that I am thrilled to have found not only the ukulele as an instrument, but such a valuable resource as TUS! Thanks you guys - and no worries about the turn around time - we all know it's worth it x 10!

I want to buy everything from Hawaiian music supply. The sincerely most helpful and nicest music store ever. This is my second Uke after being a professional bass player for over 32 years. I am astounded! First of all Aaron and Andrew were super nice and helpful in our e-mail conversations, I am so impressed by HMS. The Uke is gorgeous beyond my already high expectations. Even with the natural finish the Mango shows shimmery shades of green and gold and the grain pattern is mesmerizing and complex. The satin neck feels awesome and the tone is huge and resonant with lots of sustain and a really nice attack. The is the first uke I've played that obviously opens up the lighter you hold the body. Just exceptional all around. Quality control end-result between Pono and HMS is mind blowing. The setup is just buttery, the frets are super smooth and polished to a chrome-like perfection and I literally can't find one little imperfection on this whole instrument. I've never been so pleasantly surprised by an instrument purchase, and there has been a LOT. OK now for the things I should have done differently (personal things, NOT HMS or the Uke itself). The action is stellar but I should asked to have it on the low side, I'm a fretting wus. I'm not sure if everybody knows this but even having the option to ask this to be done to a $350 instrument from the re-seller is nothing short of an industry game changer, more amazing HMS. And I asked for, and got, a low G but the combination of it being wound and the massive resonance of the Uke makes it is a bit overpowering so I am going to swap to lower tension nylons. Playing music all my life I have gotten very used to the game music stores and instrument manufacturers play, yes I'm even a little jaded. Whether is it HMS, the Uke community Uke makers or a combination but color me reformed. What a wonderful experience. Thank you for giving me faith in the true Aloha spirit and I cannot say Mahalo enough.
