I must say that this is my first ukulele purchase, but my experience with this ukulele has been amazing from start to finish. The finish is beautiful, the color on the one I got is a little lighter than the one in the picture but still stunning. The part that really is great is the sound, for the price I would say that it is probably the best choice out there and it matches the sound of my friends which cost about twice as much. The only down side (which this is my fault but I thought I would add it just in case) is that if it is broken, in other words if the face is swung against an arm chair *AHEM THANKS FRIEND* and the face is dented or warped the soud quality of the entire instrument drops and the resonance is not near as clear or rich. Over all this uke is amazing and I can only recomend it!

- Wow. What a uke.
The Uke is beautiful. The set up is so so good. I played this uke elsewhere without a set-up, and it was good. Now, it is great.

- Great Ukulele for under $200!!!
This is a great Ukulele! It is beautiful, well constructed, loud and sounds fantastic. It is my first Uke so I don't have a lot of experience, other than the ones I played at a chain store, but this Uke feels and sounds great and I can't put it down. I have had it two weeks and it just keeps getting better. Everyone in my family is picking it up and playing it as well! I have a feeling that there are more Ukes. in my families future. The set up is fantastic. Action is low, there is absolutely no buzzing and the intonation is good up to the 12th fret. If you are looking for a great tenor under $200 it is hard to imagine anyone not liking this Ukulele. And it is much prettier than the pictures!

- Very Nice Instrument
I've been a drummer for a very long time and understand that, when it comes to instruments, you get what you pay for. I got a cheap ukulele for free about a month before I ordered my Kala spruce top tenor. It was terrible - again you get what you pay for. I am extremely happy with my Kala. It is a beautiful instrument in appearance as well as sound. I ordered a hard case with it and recommend everyone investing in anything but a cheap instrument do the same. Having a good sounding instrument is a boon to practicing. I rarely miss a day's practice and once I begin, I'm able to focus and spend some serious quality time playing because the sound is so enjoyable. So far, I'm having difficulty getting volume out of the uke while just strumming with my fingers, but if I use a pick the volume picks up significantly. If I do any finger picking the volume drops back down. At this I think it's probably my technique that is lacking rather than there being some shortcoming in the instrument. In summary, it is a beautiful instrument and I can recommend it wholeheartedly. One more thought, consider having it delivered to the local FedEx office rather than your home address - you have to personally sign for the package, so unless you are absolutely sure that you will be at home when the truck shows up you will have to go to their office anyway - and then your uke will have spent the day travelling around in the back of a hot truck.

- Awesome once I got the right set of strings on...
Looks and sounds good, great for the money! Fun and easy to play! Added a Misi pickup. Initially set up with Southcoast SLMU strings but the 1st string kept going flat as you go up fretboard. HMS customer service is great as they sent another set of the same strings but it still went flat. Long story short, sent the uke back (free shipping!) and Chris tried a bunch of different strings to find the set that stayed in tune. Aquilas and Oasis Warm worked and so did the Southcoast SMU set so I got those put on. At least I know which sets I can use now! Super fast return, too. HMS knows how to make a customer happy.

- Excellent sound, great to play!
The Kala KA-STG is my first ukulele. I was a bit nervous about buying an instrument online but after spending days at the site, I was convinced that these people are serious about ukuleles.
I must have listened to every instrument under $200. I kept coming back to the STG because of the sound, sweet and mellow. The construction is clean and neat. The finish is excellent.
Colin mentions the bridge catching on his cleaning cloths. I noticed that the corners are sharp so I took an emery board and sanded the tips.
I had Hawaii Music Supply set it up with a "low G" string, giving it a more guitar sound (to me). HMS did a fantastic job setting it up. I put a straight edge on the frets; they were dead flat. No burrs, warped neck, or anything. It is a job well done.
Would I buy the Kala KA-STG again? In a downbeat! Keep up the great work HMS! I'll be back for sure.

- Excellent ukulele, especially for the price!
I received the Kala KA-STG from Hawaii Music Supply a few months ago. So far I have been very pleased with it. Solid spruce top with laminate mahogany back and sides is very common for acoustic guitars, but is not as common for ukuleles. As such you don't exactly get that traditional tone produced by ukuleles made of koa. The sound is somewhat brighter, however it still has plenty of depth and is quite pleasing to my ear. The solid top also allows it to project very well and this ukulele can be very loud if you want it to be.
In my experience with ukuleles and guitars, solid top instruments are almost always the best value. The quality of the top of the guitar has by far the highest impact on the sound. You can usually very easily hear the difference between a solid top and a laminate, but it is generally more difficult to discern between solid top and all solid. Also the price difference between laminate is relatively small compared with the step up from solid top to all solid. I think solid top always gives you the best bang for your buck and this ukulele is an excellent example. You get a very high quality instrument with excellent sound for less than $200.
The setup by HMS was excellent, the action and intonation were perfect.. It is well worth paying for shipping to get the free setup they include on every ukulele. Ordering from them is definitely the best value. All the parts were high quality and it has stayed in tune very easily since the strings have been stretched out. The only exception is the bridge, which seems to be made of very cheap wood which is rough and gets caught on cloths during cleaning. Overall, I am extremely pleased with my purchase and I would highly recommend this ukulele to anyone, just make sure that the sound is for you.
