All Solid Acacia Baritone ~ Bone Nut & Saddle ~ Adjustable Truss Rod!

Pono is making ultra-high quality ukes for this mid-price range. This is a great example. Beautiful solid acacia wood voiced just right. We guarantee you will love the feel, sound, and look of this instrument.

This is the bare bones Acacia model. No frills, just beautiful woods, quality components, all with a satin finish. Take a listen to Mika play this model.

A key feature in all of the Pono tenor and baritone models is the dual-action adjustable truss rod. This is used to stabilize and adjust the lengthwise forward curvature (also called relief), of the neck. It can be adjusted from right inside the soundhole with an allen wrench provided. This is something you will probably not need to adjust. But over time and with humidity changes, it is a very useful option to have, and a very easy thing to adjust with little room for error.

Acacia is a family of trees that Hawaiian koa belongs to. This is not Hawaiian koa but comes from a very similar species found throughout Asia. This instrument was built on one of the Indonesian Islands with hands on guidance and quality control from the Ko'olau Ukulele Company. These are constructed by the finest instrument makers and to Ko'olau specs and design.

An aesthetically VERY minimalist instrument, but you can tell it's built with the utmost quality craftsmanship and professionalism. This was a rather big upgrade from a Beavercreek laminate baritone, and I picked this over the Kala acacia bari, and no regrets whatsoever. The overall size and dimensions are perfect for me (the neck is narrower than the Beavercreek). The tone has a sweet body but also substantial clarity and just gorgeous resonance. I did have to shave down the saddle quite a bit as the action was too high for me out of the box, but I needed to replace the strings anyway. After getting this I don't think I need another baritone uke in my life.

The description around the video described the finish as "satin". It isn't. It is very flat, dull, natural wood. (although the bridge has a satin finish). This is definitely the NO FRILLS version. The tones are deep, warm and rounded, as one would expect a good baritone to be. I hope this bari does improve with use and age. Otherwise, I will always wish that I had splurged and purchased the "deluxe" version. I wish that Pono would give a "satin" choice!

I was reviewing the Koolau Pono Guitars and Ukuleles website in 2010 and seen the incoming ukuleles for 2011 when I found that a new model ABD Pono Baritone would be released soon and made of Preta Acacia from South America. I went directly to the factory on Cane street in Wahiawa,Oahu and the shipments so happen to have arrived and I asked for the Delux Model Baritone. I was lucky that day as it was the first shipment in and only one ABD was available. It was suppose to go to Bounty Music Supply in Maui but the friendly gentleman sold it to me and setting up a passive pickup and a strap button for the neck. The Point of this story is I have grown to love this and all the music I learned to sing and play beautiful rhythems. It fills my heart by the rich sounds. This Ukulele completes me.

This is may favorite ukulele for daily playing, The sound is deep, warm and offers so much possibility (once my skills improve!). The simple undecorated beauty and the attractive wood grain make this an understated but elegant instrument. It is very comfortable to play, and compared to other baritones that I have tried, it is not overbuilt (some seem to have the resonance of a brick because they are so stiff, thick and coated with a syrup of gloss. This uke is sturdy but lively! It doesn't feel like I am playing 'it', but rather like we are interacting. It has great sustain that allows you to do things that lesser ukes can't manage, With beautiful tone and having been well set-up by HMS, this is truly one of the great bargains in the world of ukulele's.
