This all solid tenor is a great place to start your musical endeavor with the ukulele, a great step up from a laminate instrument, or a great backup for those of you with more expensive tenors. It has a very solid construction, but is still relatively light in weight with an excellent balance.

The routing for bindings and purflings is very precise, beating out the competition in this price range with meticulous quality, and now they are making it with a slotted headstock at the same price it was for years with a regular headstock. What a great value! Take a listen-

Voiced to be articulate and still full, this tenor ukulele will give you everything you need. After it goes through our custom setup this model is definitely the model to beat in the under $300 range. Something about an all solid Mahogany tenor is hard to beat. When done right, like the SMHT, it gives a warm full mid-range tone that will have you grabbing your uke and loving the sound! If you just have a starter ukulele step up to an all solid wood one like this and you will truly hear a big difference! Couple that with the setup work we put into it and you will love the Sound and the Feel!!

We are not a marketing-focused company. We spend much more time behind a bench making ukes like this one play and feel great. We set up each instrument to ensure you get the absolute best for your money! This includes Saddle and Nut heights, Fretwork (usually planing or "dressing"), intonation checks, and a thorough inspection for a cosmetic flaw. This is crucial for this middle price range where you can really get close to a high-end tenor feel from our work. And always, we are dedicated to giving you honest and expert service and advice!

This is my first uke and I love it. Was hard to decide but I knew I wanted a solid wood Luke. Being an acoustic guitar player, I knew the importance of sold wood. This Luke looks good and plays well. The guys at the Uke Site store on the North shore were helpful but not pushy and allowed me to choose freely. As a new instrument, I am happy I got this one!

A Good Starter Ukulele, But Not Well Balanced 0 people found this helpful

This is my first Ukulele. It's very pretty but also very basic. It has a nice full sound. The quality is good but not flawless. I nearly never have to tune it. It just stays put. But, you can see traces of glue along the seams where the neck meets with the body. Also, the instrument isn't well balanced and the headstock wants to be lower than I want it to be (it's a neck diver). I make do by not keeping a headstock tuner attached to it and and by using a strap.

I started out last year with a Mitchell concert and then decided to upgrade to a tenor. After researching on whether to get the $500 Martin or an under $200 laminate I found the Kala SMHT in the middle. I'm blown away with the volume and the sound. I got the low G strings and love the sound. HMS did a great job with the prep, the price was right and the shipping quick. Also love the slot head look.
