I've bought a bajillion "first uke" books, and too many either jump in too fast, don't have good exercises, or think a single page on reading notes is enough for people with no musical background (ie. plenty of new uke players). This book is fantastic, and it the one my tutor uses. My only recommendation is, if you're planning on learning sheet music instead of just tabs, put a couple strips of masking tape over the tabulature- that way you won't be distracted by the tabs while actively playing, but you can still read them if you look close enough.

A good book for beginners with simple and clear explanations on how to get started with playing the ukulele. Each section covered in the book has examples of songs to practise. The book comes together with an audio CD which is helpful to learn the correct way to play the songs. However, the sections explaining the chords and strums take as examples a few songs which I found rather complicated as a beginner. For this reason, I believe this book goes well together with Hal Leonard’s “Easy Songs for Ukulele”.

If you're an absolute beginner this is a very good book. As others have stated, it teaches basic music theory along with ukulele skills. If play another instrument you will move quickly through this book. Even as an experienced pianist, I do appreciate the careful teaching of note reading and playing the individual notes - it doesn't jump right into chords. You are able to quickly begin playing melodies - almost instant gratification; this helps to keep you motivated! This book came as part of the ukulele package that I ordered. I also added Jumpin' Jim's Tips 'n' Tunes to my collection. Using both of them helped to keep me from becoming bored. Our 12 year old son who has no musical background is using the Hal Leonard book to teach himself to play the uke (with some help from mom, of course!)

This is a well thought out basic beginner book. If you have experience with other stringed instruments you will fly though this pretty quickly. This is not just a chord book. It will give you instructions on strumming, chords and scales along with music notation and music reading.
