Solid Mahogany, Easy to Play, & Twice the Fun!

All the way across the pacific and almost to Australia, a hand full of super talented craftsman on the island of Java are making Pono guitars and ukuleles. Pono means excellence, and they have been living up to it.

We have seen this model many times, but it sounds more amazing than the ever. Full body of sound only heard in high end Hawaiian Eight stringers. You play the eight string just like the four string and models like this sound incredible, so why do so many shy away from them. Perhaps two reasons...

  1. Staying in Tune is more difficult. (But not with quality tuning keys like this instrument)
  2. Harder to play. (The MTD8 actually feels great!)

A precision low action takes Way less effort than other models on the market. Plus the dual action, light weight titanium truss rod in Pono tenors is even more crucial in the multi string situation like this. The MTD8 has a gorgeous gloss finish, ebony appointments, and sounds amazing. This instrument will inspire your music and surely bring many years of joy,

All of the Pono tenor and baritone models is the dual-action adjustable truss rod. This is used to stabilize and adjust the lengthwise forward curvature (also called relief), of the neck. It can be adjusted from right inside the soundhole with an allen wrench provided. This is something you will probably not need to adjust. But over time and with humidity changes, it is a very useful option to have and an easy thing to adjust.

Ko'olau is very exacting and the results are impressive! Experience the quality now achieved and the fun of an eight string ukulele!

Options

One of the options for this ukulele is to trade out the Herco HE-360, included humidifier, for the more expensive Oasis Ukulele Humidifier (OH-18) at a discount. This is required if you live in a low humidity area.(parts of California, Nevada, Arizona, etc..) or also areas with winter seasons, especially if you are heating the air in your house. For more info refer to the ukulele care link at the bottom of this page. If you think you need to humidify the instrument, then you also need a hard case for a humidifier to properly work, and you need to maintain the humidifier by refilling it as needed.

Another option is to switch from high G tuning (like in the video) to low G tuning. This is a blog article discussing it if you are not sure whether you want High or Low G?

Put a note in the special instructions if you need to or would like to let our setup or shipping department know anything.

One of the options for this ukulele is to trade out the Herco, included humidifier, for the more expensive Oasis Ukulele Humidifier (OH-18). This is suggested if you live in a low humidity area.(parts of California, Nevada, Arizona, etc..) including cold winter areas if you are heating the air most of the day and night. For more info see our Ukulele Care link at the bottom of the site

With the purchase of this ukulele, the Pono passive pickup system can be installed.

None of these options are required. You can still create a package with accessories on the site by going to different product pages and adding to cart. This ukulele will automatically come with a Herco HE-360 Humidifier. The options are just for convenience and to offer an extra discount while you buy this instrument.

Put a note in the special instructions if you want it strung with a low G at no extra charge or any specific setup instructions(i.e. string for left-handed, I play light and like very low action etc....)

All around a good Ukulele
I had this bet with my dad if i could learn a really hard song he would get me a super nice ukulele (1000$). So I wanted to get a nice pono ukulele. When the time came around we didnt have enough money for that, so the next best choice that I wanted was this 8 string Pono. The sound from this Ukulele is amazing, I think sometimes it overwhelms the guitars that I play with. Its great for playing chords and hawaiian tunes. People think you cannot pick on it, but you can and it still sounds great! All in all, GET THIS 8 STRING! if you want one, definitely get this Ukulele!

Beautifully built! Wonderful to hear!
It's like opening a gift every time I open the case. The fit, finish, the contrasts in the grain make it a gorgeous ukulele. It fits well in the fret hand though pressing 8 strings will require more strength. The 8 strings make fast strumming a breeze. The ring of the mahogany and the Mahana strings sound awesome.

Highly playable, excellent build!
Held back for a long time before I decided to take the plunge and get the MTD8. I had always thought that the 8-string will be a lot more difficult to play, with the increased tension and all. But this proved otherwise.

Tension is just right, and the strings get in tune easily. Just takes a little more patience than the 4-stringers, but definitely worth the effort.

And the mahogany is lovely!

Very happy to have added this to the collection.
