Details

This all mahogany tenor is a popular choice at HMS. It has a wonderful sound and feels great, the essentials that every player needs to be passionate about playing. For a solid tenor in this price range, the MTD is hard to beat. If you want a "meatier" sound from your ukulele, or even if you have a really expensive uke but want something to take around that sounds really good, this is an excellent choice.

Pictures show the exact ukulele available here. Video shows the same model.

Kris gives us a raw sound sample with the stock Ko'olau Alohi high wound 3rd set.

The tonal character of good mahogany has been loved since ukuleles first started being made. When built right you get a full mid range with good clarity and warmth, just right for many players.

How is this model different than the MT? This deluxe model has gloss finish, a really nice gloss finish! It has ebony freboard and bridge as well.

A key feature in all of the Pono tenor and baritone models is the dual-action adjustable truss rod. This is used to stabilize and adjust the lengthwise forward curvature (also called relief), of the neck. It can be adjusted from right inside the soundhole with an allen wrench provided. This is something you will probably not need to adjust. But over time and with humidity changes, it is a very useful option to have, and a very easy thing to adjust with little room for error.

Options

One of the options for this ukulele is to trade out the Herco HE-360, included humidifier, for the more expensive Oasis Ukulele Humidifier (OH-18) at a discount. This is required if you live in a low humidity area.(parts of California, Nevada, Arizona, etc..) or also areas with winter seasons, especially if you are heating the air in your house. For more info refer to the ukulele care link at the bottom of this page. If you think you need to humidify the instrument, then you also need a hard case for a humidifier to properly work, and you need to maintain the humidifier by refilling it as needed.

Another option is to switch from high G tuning (like in the video) to low G tuning. This is a blog article discussing it if you are not sure whether you want High or Low G?

Put a note in the special instructions if you need to or would like to let our setup or shipping department know anything.

Amazing Ukulele
I have been playing on a laminate lanikai for the last several years and I have to say hands down this Ukulele beats it by leaps and bounds. This ukulele sounds absolutely amazing! I listened to the guys at HMS play a demo of this line of Ukes and also a couple examples on facebook and I have to say it sounds even better in person. I couldn't be happier! Sorry I didn't say this sooner but Mahalo Nui Loa Hawaii Music Supply! I will be sure to send more customers your way!

Thank you HMS and Pono
I am very happy, thanks to Pono for making such an elegant, beautiful-sounding, and good value instrument, and to HMS for the excellent website and setup. I bought the Pono AS too, and got free shipping to Sydney, Australia - thanks again, HMS. These ukuleles are really well made, and sound fantastic, especially for the price. You could spend much more for one instrument than I paid for two, but I doubt you would get much of an improvement in quality.

Tops!
Very simple in appearance - no frills. nice straight grain mahogany. Dont really like the tuners. I find they are a little bit tricky to use, which is the only reason I gave this uke 4 stars instead of 5. That aside...

This uke has a beautiful sound that seems to get sweeter and louder by the day. pairing with some flourocarbon strings makes this a dream to play.

Great service and setup by HMS!

Love This Uke!!!
The guys at HMS did a great job helping me decide between the Pono ATD and this . This was my first ukulele purchase and as a guitar player for 15 years I know that you cannot cheap out on an instrument. I got this ukulele and could not be happier with my purchase! The build quality is awesome and the wood quality is superb. Reminds me of my $3000 PRS guitar. Had them set it up with a low g and with lower action! They did an outstanding job and I will be buying my next ukulele from them as well!

A Great Tenor
The MTD is a great sounding solid-wood Tenor Ukulele...and then you get it set up by HMS...and then you see the price...and your mind is blown, imho!

If you want a starter Tenor that is not laminate...this Pono is hard to beat...if not impossible to beat aside from maybe a Pono ATD...but to me unless it is Koa...Mahogany is tops...most necks are made out of the stuff...and the original circa 1920 Martins were Mahogany! Add HMS setup to your liking and their customer service, and this might be the only ukulele you ever own!

ENJOY!!!

Fantastic instrument
All though at first a bit apprehensive about buying from overseas, I could not be more please with my uke. It has the most beautiful sound, the tone is superb, and the finish is excellent. I could not wish for better.
The help I received was wonderful and my queries were answered without question.
I certainly will be buying my next ukelele from these people, but at them moment I am in love with this model.

Outstanding Tenor!!!!!
I recently received my Pono MTD and absolutely LOVE it. The sound is exactly how it sounds on their sample video clip. They go out of their way to be as accurate as possible in their presentation. This baby sings with a beautiful warm tone. Visually it's far nicer looking in person than in the pics. The gloss finish isn't too shiny but perfect and the color is full of warmth. I couldn't have asked for a better experience. These guys are PROS!!! Andrew was incredible to work with and he made sure everything came together in a professional way, all the way from choosing the instrument, conducting their professional set up, and making sure I was happy in the end. I will certainly be shopping here again. Don't worry about buying a quality Ukulele over the internet from this outfit. They REALLY KNOW WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT. I can't say enough about the experience!!!

Great Value Tenor
I got my MTD a couple of months ago and it has become my go to uke for most playing. I've played guitar for many years and find the thicher neck better suits my hands, and I love the gloss finish. I wasn't to impressed by the Mahana strings that came on it, a bit to mellow for my taste, but changed to Worth Low G Clears and they seem to be a perfect fit for me on this uke. I highly recommend the MTD and think it compares very favorably with instruments costing much more.

I love the sound of this Uke. I got the pickup and tuner along with the hard shell case and I have been very pleased. The setup was well done and the intonation is great. I would not hesitate to recommend this uke.

beautiful look and nice sound in a mid-range instrument
I thought I was a "satin finish" guy until I saw this ukulele, which has a gloss that is not excessively shiny. The sound is pure and clear โ€” I wouldn't call it loud, but the thing rings, and it has nice sustain. This was my first solid wood ukulele and, having tried more (and less) expensive ukes, I think this Pono (and other Ponos I've tried) are a great middle ground between entry level and the $1,000-and-up options.

Awesome first and last uke
This was my first serious ukulele purchase. I love it (loved it since I sold it). Wish I had it back! I learned on this ukulele and moved on to Kanilea and then to Koaloha. The sustain is decent, the intonation up and down the neck is okay. The best feature is actually its worst. The thick neck. You have to work hard at getting to fret the notes especially the augmented and alternate ones up and down the neck. However, when I finally got the traditional K ukuleles I found I was able to play it because of my pono. These are great beginner ukes not necessarily for price since it is up there (but worth every penny) but good to get your fingers ready. Does not keep a note as long my Kanilea tat nor does it project like my Koaloha, but it will take a beating on the beach and turning heads. Ponos are a quality uke and needs more attention.

Pono MTD
Just great. This Pono plays like a charm and sounds awesome.

Very dynamic playing - allowing for easy hammer ons/bends.
Very accepting of strings changes.
Good for hard strumming - won't sound too clumsy if strummed a little too hard.
The gloss looks great, though I've read that the MT sounds just as good without the extra money.
One thing to know about Ponos is the wood is extremely soft - the slightest hit of the uke can and will cause a dent.

Overall, this Pono is great. Sounds great, looks great, plays great. Love it. Closest you'll get to a professional uke for this price in my opinion.

Great product and service
I tested a few ukes before finding the PONO MTD. The comparison process provided let me check out several ukes within an hour. I found one I wanted, and could afford!, and it was shipped within 24 hours and I was playing it within 3 days! It made me sound much better immediately. Can't beat such a good uke, at such a good price and with such good service from The Hawaii Music Store.

Great sound
I have small hands and a beginner but wanted to buy a good sounding instrument and thus far, I am happy with this buy. Sound resonates and has depth to it. I find the size a tad large for me though it may be attributed to being new to playing the uke. I ordered through the internet and it came in one piece. They ran out of the beginning book and substituted with a more advanced book that I found near useless. I had a little trouble in the beginning using the tuner and wrote to the vendor but never got a reply. Not sure if I had more serious issues what the service would have been. Otherwise the purchase was as advertised and uneventful through the internet.

best tenor ever owned
Andrew and Zack at HMS did a great job on helping me choose the pono MTD tenor. low G setup with unwound strings for me was the way to go. the look and the sound of this ukulele are 5 stars. I have owned kala oscar and lanikai ukuleles theses where all great but the pono MTD sounds to me like what a pro studio ukulele would sound like. If you choose the MTD you made a great choice.
