The new Kamaka Strings are very “warm” and balanced. They are not as bright as some other brands, but they have a nice round sound and great intonation from a machine radius and rectification.

Some people listen to others or read forums to see what strings others are using. BUT... Every ukulele, technique of the player, and personal preference is different. The best thing to do is try a number of different strings and see which one sounds best on your ukulele. If you have a number of ukes you may find you prefer different brands or variations of strings because each ukulele reacts differently to the same strings. The only draw back is these strings take a while to stretch out and stay in tune, as do all nylon strings. But it’s worth it!

I like the Kamaka Blacks - They go PLUNK!
Unlike some folks, I like the Kamaka black strings BECAUSE they are higher tension/harder and give my tenor ukulele the PLUNK sound that makes an ukulele stand out. I have not got that plunk with other strings, and I've tried a number of other brands sold by HMS. I think Kamaka put the right strings on their tenor ukes from the factory, and I say that because, after the initial stretch period, which is unfortunately rather long, the black strings sound terrific, intonate well, and have good volume and tone, with that characteristic PLUNK. I don't need a 'warm' or overly bright sound. I need a sound that offers tone and percussion, and the black strings provide that very well. If you are avoiding the Kamaka blacks because of the harder feel on the fingers, then your ACTION is probably set too high, or you are using a shorter neck ukulele. The Kamaka blacks are my favorite strings on tenor ukulele. Tenors have longer necks, and that may be why the Kamaka blacks work so well on tenors..

Very good w/ wound low G
I really like this string set with the wound low G. I play most of my tenor ukuleles tuned a half step down and these strings respond very well. I will continue to use them along with a few other brands depending on which instrument.

Kamaka strings are hard, somewhat dull sounding, but last a long time.
I changed my Kamaka Tenor's strings 5 or 6 times with Kamaka strings. I thought they sounded fine but I always felt they felt really hard. I finally tried Aquilas at the insistance of my nephew. The Kamaka strings were a lot harder on my fingers and I found that they were also a lot duller sounding. The price of the Kamaka strings are quite low but I would not buy them because of the price since strings are cheap anyway. I now believe the Kamaka strings to be hard and somewhat dull sounding. The one positive I can say them is they last a long time.
