Details

Years ago Kala gave Michael Aratani a one of a kind tenor with his name inlayed on the headstock. It has a solid spruce top and solid rosewood sides and back, as well as herringbone purfling and a unique checkered binding.  Kala has done a limited run modeled after that custom tenor. This version has a slotted headstock just adding to the striking sharp looks. But the tone is truly most impressive!  Kala brings their best sound yet on this tribute tenor.

Choosing FedEx 2 day does not mean you will have it in 2 days. It's more like a week but fluctuates and we list our current turnaround time HERE. Why?  Because either Joel or Chris still need to set it up. Joel and Chris were Mike's original MGM setup crew so they are surely most qualified to set up his commemorative model. That's why we bought all the ones they brought to Hawaii. And we still want this to be a fantastic deal because it commemorates our pal, Michael Aratani, who is still very much a part of us here at The Ukulele Site.

Corey gives an MGM style sound sample. This is "raw" audio. Not compressed or mastered for use with small devices.  Use quality speakers or headphones for a true listening experience. Pictures and video are stock typical.

We are including the UkeCrazy hard case for free!

Kala Aratani Tenor
After playing guitar, I've always wanted to play ukulele so I decided to get a decent one that plays, looks and sounds good. The Kala Aratani model I bought here on the Ukulele site was the best choice I could have possibly made for the price point. Upgraded the strings to Worth browns and it plays like a dream. The customer service was outstanding and it was worth the wait for the pro set up. I wouldn't buy one from anywhere else. Aloha!

Purchase of a lifetime
This is a completely solid wood instrument with a slotted headstock, grover tuners, all that mother of pearl, AND and perfect case (not some softy gig bag)... you're getting a serious value here. In addition to the rigorous setup standard, you aren't going to be disappointed. The tone on this is unbelievable. The low G and super nylgut strings (I opted to add the super nylgut for an upcharge) cut through the air beautifully. Make the right choice and buy with confidence from these folks.

I love this Ukulele!
After several months of shopping for a new concert ukulele, I settled on this new Tenor. I like a spruce instrument and this one really caught my eye. I had to have it. This was my first time ordering from HMS and I could not be more satisfied. Joel was great and helped me out when I missed something on my order. When my new uke arrived, it was better looking than the pictures. It was packaged beautifully and I could see the care that was taken in shipping it to me. As soon as I started to play, I could appreciate the set up. No buzz anywhere up or down the fretboard and it was silky smooth. The tone was really nice. Fingerpicking produced a nice bell like tone. I am very happy with this Kala. I hope that I can honor MGM with joyful music.

Oh yeah...I still need a new concert.

My new treasure
If Faberge were to craft a ukulele it would look like this one...pure eye candy. The straight grain of the Englemann top and rosewood back/sides is absolutely gorgeous. It is a joy to play and produces beautiful tones. It absolutely chimes when I pick bar chords in the higher register. Well done Kala.

I'd like to thank Andrew, Crystal, Joel and anyone else from HMS who had a hand in getting me this little cutie. I've been playing guitar for over 50 years and it was so refreshing to get a stringed instrument that I did not have to take to my luthier for setup. In addition, the package included a case, humidifier and free 2-day FedEx shipping from Hawaii. I'm floored. Bravo team HMS, you have won my business and respect!

The next time you get twitching with UAS, this will do the trick quite nicely. Trust me, you want this one.

Fingerpicking Delight
I'm a relatively new player and this is my first "quality" instrument. I'm in love with it and pick it up every chance I get. Besides being a gorgeous ukulele, the sound and playability are superb. I'm mostly a fingerpicker/chord melody player, and the harp-like clarity and note separation are outstanding. It's not too shabby for strumming, either! It's currently strung with Worth Browns, which really make the notes pop. I'm extremely happy with this Kala ukulele and also happy with HMS's service, selection, price, and setup.

Beautiful to look at and play
Happy, happy, happy!!! I just received my ukulele and I am so impressed. The Ukulele Site ensures that you will receive a beautiful instrument to both look at and play. This ukulele is a work of art and the tone is so resonant. I had mine strung with a low G and really like the way it handles the jazz style. I've been playing guitar for over 40 years and have played around on various ukes, but could never find a quality instrument in town. Thank you!!

My favorite Kala Special Edition
This is my third and favorite Kala special edition. I didn't really need the damn thing. My tri-back is nice and bright, and my Sweet Pea acacia is a joy to play and has a deep, full sound. So when Santa put this in my stocking with Southcoast linear strings, it made it harder for me to spread the love. My wife immediately commented on how good it sounded (my dogs became jealous because it was taking up too much of their lap time.) I will probably make the switch to re-entrant strings and tuning someday, because I play that a little more and think this will be my favorite, but for right now I don't want to touch a thing. This was my first ukulele from The Site, but if UAS ever strikes again, I'll be back. Set-up was perfect. With the case thrown in, an exceptional deal.

Amazing tone!
At first is really did not like to feel of the neck and the tone really did not speak to me like I thought it would. however after about month of just killing this thing and really playing it hard (played the hell out of it) I am completely amazed with the tone its almost like she just needed to be played now compared to just about every ukulele I play nothing can beat the volume and tone!

Best Kala Ever Made!
Great tone, wonderful harmonics and sustain. Highly dynamic - rivals much more expensive instruments for its playability. Put a blindfold on, play it next to something 10x the cost, then be surprised when you find out what you played.
My only downside: Finish is finicky. It will be difficult not to dink the finish just by looking at it.

This is a great ukulele!
Love this uke! Sound is warm, rounded, vibrant & out there w/ the Southcoast strings. The set-up is right. The construction & details are nicely done. I've many ukes costing much more than this, but this one is preferred over several of them. It is a great value for a solid wood ukulele. To me, tone & set-up is everything and this ukulele has it all! It is a wonderful tribute to Michael Aratani.

Amazing Ukulele!
This ukulele is a bit on the pricey side, but man is it worth it.

Looks:
The pictures on the site don't do it justice. This is a beautiful ukulele. I love how the rosewood back contrasts with the spruce top. I also much prefer the satin finish this has as opposed to the glossy finish my other uke has. Kala has really paid attention to details on this uke. The checkered bindings, custom fret markers and picture of MGM just make this ukulele one of a kind. On top of all that, this has a slotted head stock with Grover Geared Tuners.

Sound:
As most spruce tops do, this uke sings! It cuts through the air and delivers a loud, but still warm, sound. It feels like the setup guys really took their time with my uke and it sounds amazing.

The best thing about this uke is that it was made to honor MGM which I bought my first and only ukulele from back in the day on Ebay. He was very helpful and patient with me back then as I was struggling to choose a ukulele and I'm proud to have both of my ukuleles because of him.

Buy this, you won't regret it.

Gorgeous Ukulele and decent sounds
There are two reasons why I decided to buy this ukulele. MGM model has a great story behind and material combination used in this model interest me as well.

Spruce and Indian Rose wood have been standard for classical guitars for very long time. I was very curious about how ukulele made from these materials sounds. The final result is quite much as I expected, the spruce top has the most dominant part of the sound quality. Regardless other materials, spruce top instruments always sounds like spruce and there are no other way to go around. For comparison I have Kala KA-FMTG which also has solid spruce top but sides and back are laminated maple. Differences are marginal and I need to say its impossible for me to recognize which one is MGM in blind test. It might take while when until solid sides and back to open up, so maybe results will change in one year.

Craftsmanship is Awesome! MGM model is gorgeous and it feels really good on hands. Satin finish is really something I prefer. Wood grains on wood are perfect straight. Neck is made from perfect quarter sawn wood.
The set-up made by HMS feels good for me fingers.

Big Bang for the Buck
This is a great sounding Tenor Uke with nice additions. Nice slotted headstock with curly fret markers and solid woods make it a nice sound. I have a trophy Pono for the house and wanted a nice travel Uke and this was more than I expected. Of course the guys at the Ukulele Site set this up to play out of the box to sound just perfect. If you are looking for a reasonable cost Tenor Uke that sounds good, this is a great choice.

Great sound - Best Kala out there
This Uke has an amazing sound, I bought this to travel with but now it sits out beside the couch and gets more playtime than my Pono..LOL The build is top notch for Kala, nice tribute Uke to Mike A. For the money this Uke has raised the bar on performance, look and sound. Thanks to the guys at The Uke Site for setup and checkout, this is good to go right out the box.
