Kala KA-SA-T -All Solid Acacia Tenor Ukulele

This beautiful, all-solid Striped Acacia will turn heads and please ears. Decorative features include a slotted headstock with vintage styled gear tuners, custom abalone fret marker inlays, maple binding and vintage-style herringbone purfling. Acacia is also called Mimosa or Shower Tree; these tropical trees are cousins of the Hawaiian Koa Tree. They have gorgeous striped patterns of light and dark brown and have a deep colorful tone that match their beauty.

For the last decade this model has been one of our best selling models. For 2018 they changed the model name from ASAC-T to SA-T. The binding is now maple wood and the fretboard and bridge are walnut. They lightened the weight of this instrument and increased the resonance and the new SA-T is certainly one of the best options for a high quality, modestly priced solid wood tenor.

What is our "setup"? We don't make these ukuleles. We make these ukuleles better! This includes Saddle and Nut heights, Fret work (usually planing or "dressing"), intonation checks, and a thorough inspection for cosmetic flaw. This is crucial for this middle price range where you can really get close to a high end tenor feel from our extra work. And always, we are dedicated to giving you honest and expert service and advice!

Kala really nailed it with this model. Good looks, balanced tones, and after our setup this tenor plays as good as it comes! Don't hesitate because these won't be in stock for long!

We always include a humidifier with solid wood instruments. This is not an option, and we do not charge for it.

Most people shop with us because of the extensive quality control and final setup work we provide at no extra cost on all ukuleles we ship out. However this is time consuming work and creates a delay in shipping. We are now offering an "Expedited Setup" for those wanting to receive their instrument faster. See details on the Full Setup and Expedited Setup options along with current turnaround times for each at the link- HERE.

When you buy this ukulele you can get a gig bag or canvas covered hard case at an additional discount. (Not required but suggested.) The gig bag and canvas-covered hardcase can be seen in our cases category under the Accessories tab at the top of this page. Other cases can also be chosen there.

One of the options for this ukulele is to trade out the Herco HE-360, included humidifier, for the more expensive Oasis Ukulele Humidifier (OH-18) at a discount. This is required if you live in a low humidity area.(parts of California, Nevada, Arizona, etc..) or also areas with winter seasons, especially if you are heating the air in your house. For more info refer to the ukulele care link at the bottom of this page. If you think you need to humidify the instrument, then you also need a hard case for a humidifier to properly work, and you need to maintain the humidifier by refilling it as needed.

The best instrument you will ever own!
This is my first uke, I've had it for a year now and I still can't put it down. I didn't get a chance to get mine from the ukulele site since they were sold out when I was looking. I found mine on ebay in an "opened box" for $250. I didn't get the HMS set-up I would have liked to get but I paid less. So I can't comment on the set-up but... coming from playing guitar I never knew what I was missing till I got this uke. The wood and inlays are not only beautiful and eye-catching they also allow the uke to have a very nice dynamic range from soft finger picking to hard and fast strumming. I really like layering of the wood you can see in the angled cut of the slotted head stock, very nice touch. If you want a to learn uke and look/sound good while doing it this is the uke for you. I like and play this more than I do my guitars now. It's so comfortable and easy to sit and the couch and pick away quietly while everything in the house is going on.

Good uke, but not holding up to time
This is a great sounding and looking ukulele, however mine is not holding up. I've had it about 4 years and the bridge is lifting, the saddle moves in the bridge slot and one of the tuner peg heads is loose and rattles. It still sounds good, but I imagine I only have a couple years before I need to put some serious money into it or buy something else. I have an similarly aged mahogany PONO that has had no issues. I also prefer the thicker neck and resulting weight distribution of the PONO.

    Sounds and looks amazing.
This ukulele sounds rich and full, and also has a great dynamic range. You can play from sweet and quiet tones to loud, barking sounds.
It looks beautiful. The acacia wood is a combination of brown and dark-gold color that creates amazing looking patterns, The Grover tuners are very high quality and holds the tone very well. The intonation is spot on.
Amazing instrument overall, especially for the price. And with the HMS's set-up. This ukulele truly feels like a high-end professional instrument.

    very mellow tone
i bought my Kala ASAC TE used in the UK. It's the same model but has the Shadow pickup and preamp factory fitted and costs around £80 more. Mine also came witha TGI ABS hard case. All for under £250 and the cases cost over £50 so very pleased with the price. A couple of members of my Uke club already had this model so I knew they were good. Mine is beautifully made and flawlessly finished. The only negative is that the strap button/jack socket is 1/4 inch off centre. The person who fitted it must have had his eyes closed! I also own 2 fairly new made in Mexico Martins a S1 and C1K. Both weigh considerably less than the Kala and are louder with more treble. However the Kala is mellow and sweet where the Martins are a little brash. I love my Martins and have nothing but praise for them even though they're not USA made. But of course neither is the Kala its Chinese. There is this idea that USA made ukes are the best. Well the Chinese have been making instruments for centuries so if you buy a Chinese uke at this price you can expect it to be just as well made as a USA uke costing much more
Due to wage costs. My Kala is beautifully set up now and a pleasure to play. The slot head looks amazing with the way it's veneered and routed to show the different coloured woods. The tuners are Grovers. As good as any. My Martins have Grovers too. The neck is beautifully finished and the frets perfect as far as I can tell. No sharp edges or high spots. It plays in tune as far up the neck as I ever venture. Ok it's not loud but it is just so so sweetly voiced that you forgive that. Plus I can always plug mine in if I want loud! Try before you buy as with anything. I'm very pleased with mine.

    Excellent instrument
I purchased the kala solid acacia tenor as my first solid wood instrument from hawaii music supply and I have nothing but good things to say, across the board. Amazing sound and feel, beautiful wood and detail, and a great deal at that price. The work up that hawaii music supply did was perfect and I had the instrument on the main land a week and a half after placing the order. I am incredibly satisfied with the instrument and the service and I will definitely by many more ukuleles from hawaii music supply. Thanks!

Tough uke to put down esp for the price
I own a concert and a tenor of the Kala Acacia series ukes. They're built pretty solid but I did notice some very small blemishes in the finish if I inspect it under a microscope. Barring that, it's priced amazingly well especially considering that it is a solid acacia ukulele and with additional cosmetics like rosette, fret inlays, rope and rosewood bindings etc that you only find on more expensive ukuleles.

The tone is nice and bright as one would expect from acacia and intonation was on the money on both my ukes. Neck size was comfortable and the fretboard is edged with rosewood so you don't have any issues with sharp fret wires in drier climes.

The only cons I can find on this uke are the weight. They are built pretty solid and as a result, weigh more than the more expensive K brand ukes. Compared to some other brands or other Kala models, these ukes aren't as loud volume wise, not to say that they're quite, on the contrary. You'll have to play one to see for yourself.

For the price and what you get, it's hard to overlook the Kala Acacia series.

Great uke at a moderate price
I bought this uke 2 years ago and it quickly became my main player. The fit and finish are fantastic. Mine actually has a very fine curl to the grain which gives it a beautiful velvety look when held to the light.

I originally bought this uke because I have a Pono Mango tenor which I have strung Low G and wanted a tenor tuned to normal reentrant tuning. I seached for months for a quality tenor that didn't have normal geared tuners because I prefer the traditional look of a uke with friction tuners. When Kala released this uke I knew this was what I wanted.

I couldn't be happier with my choice. This uke is beautiful to look at, comfortable to play, and sounds sweet. I am always complimented at my uke club about the interestng inlays or the slotted headstock. It is also one that many of the other players ask if they can try. Everyone loves it.

This uke is also a great traveller. I live in PA, and it has gone with me for long weekends in the mountains, weeks at the Outer Banks of North Carolina and to the beaches of St John USVI. It has been to all different environments and always stays in tune.

If you are looking for an eyecatching solid wood uke that sounds great, you would be hard pressed to find a better one in this price range. Kala outdid themselves with this one.

6 weeks is a long time to wait for a Kala Uke
It took 6 weeks from I ordered my Kala Akascia Tenor ukulele till the package reach my house in Norway. I was very excited and scared that it was lost.
So I was very glad when it arrived. At first I was a little bit disapointed.
For me the strings where to high over the fretboard and the setup was not very good for me. I usually play on a Martin soprano, 50 years old, and not many ukes I have played can mach that one. But after I had used file and sandpaper, I vas very pleased. I am very glad i bought it and after setting it upp, it is very playable.

gorgeous looking, initially quieter than expected, set up and time may be very important.
Last year I went to my town's local Kala dealer immediately when I found out they had this ukulele in. Perhaps they hadn't done a set up, I mean I was ready to fall in love with her on looks alone, yet she just seemed so kind of tight and quiet that I set her aside and started strumming the Lacewood model. Immediately the Lacewood just hands down had such a more articulated voice and projection, that the visual beauty of the Acacia just didn't matter any more. I came in for a month and kept trying both, yet I always spent the majority of my time with the Lacewood.
I suspect that the Acacia top really opens up over time, and that the quieter ukes grow greater in volume over time too. However, I have a hard time imagining that this particular model by this maker at that price point can really get that Acacia to voice as lovely as a cedar or spruce soundboard. The Ukulele Site price is pretty good for this uke.

    Light, mellow and pretty
I had one of these a few years back. It was my first real (i.e.: not-a-toy) uke.

It's a very light instrument and it has a smallish and somewhat narrow neck. The sound is not too far off Hawaii Koa - certainly it's quite distinct from mahogany.

Overal, a very nice instrument, sounds great strung high or low g.

    Best acoustic sound
I bought this uke a little over a year ago. I love playing it, and though I have other ukes (including more expensive), this is my go to. After hearing someone else play it recently I appreciate the sound even more. The sound is full, to the warm side I would say (with a low g setup) and expressive. For acoustic sound, nothing I own beats this one. I would recommend however that you ask for setup with different strings (not the standard Aquila). It's subjective I know, but I think the best sound with this uke is with flourocarbon or classical guitar strings. But if you get it setup with Aquila strings you'll have larger slots in the nut that make it more challenging to match the action to a narrower string later.

    Great sound, poor tuning keys
First off, great sounding and playing tenor uke - I got mine from HMS with a low G string and it's great to play. Loses one star owing to the quality of the tuning keys: 2 of the 4 on mine are flaky - that is to say that the shaft and thumb parts are not solidly connected, there's some give which makes tuning difficult; to give them their due, Kala sent me a full set of replacement keys so problem solved; however, these keys don't have a screw to tighten so if the shaft is loose you're stuck with it till replacement parts arrive.I think this is something Kala has to improve. Uke itself beautiful and sounds fantastic, and inlays are art, no question about it.

Nothing wrong on this work of art !!
I had donne a lot of reasearch before upgrading from a starter makala tenor to a solid wood instrument.
I was looking for something of the best quality that middle-end ukes could offer and ended up on this one.
I find the aesthetics just perfect for its kind: the herringbone purfling and rosette are the perfect match for the smouth satin finish and the wine-like markers add a fancy note to the picture.
It's strong built and the slothead adds a lot to it (great balance with the slightly curved back).
The one i got has beautiful acacia, the soundboard looks golden and has slight curles to it that i really didn't expect to find in this price range.
I may not be the best personne to judge its tone, but it sounds so much more"complete" than my laminated uke, a bell-like tone i've got nothing to complain about.
Overall, one of the best ukes in its category, not aiming to be the shiniest, but the most elegant, and this really makes you pick it up often!
    Thanks a lot HMS <(^_^)>

    Beautiful instrument
I wasn't sure I wanted to spend this much on my first uke, but after reading a multitude of reviews, then hearing Corey play it, there was no other instrument (apart from an Hawaiian Koa) that would do.

When it arrived so quickly, set up professionally and almost as lovely looking as the photos, I was thrilled to bits.

Whilst this Kala doesn't project as well as other ukes I've played (I wish I'd gotten an amp installed to play on stage), it certainly has a beautiful bell-like clarity that I know is only going to improve with time. Everyone who sees it comments how beautiful the wood grain is. Not to mention that gorgeous slotted headstock! It hardly ever goes out of tune and the natural finish feels amazing to play.

The 'uke crazy' canvas covered case and humidifier are a few more extras that just confirms HMS' reputation as a high quality, reliable online instrument dealer.

Based on this experience, I'd definitely buy from HMS again.

    Heavy build
I like this uke but the Kala Solid Mahogany Tenor is a much better sounding instrument, in my opinion, for a lot less money. Also a lot lighter.

The slot-head and acacia wood are cool and attractive but I'm not a fan of the curly-cue position markers. I think this would look great with no fretboard markers.

The weight of this uke is heavy and solid to me. I"m sure others will love this instrument but I just never connected with it.

Tremendous value and consistency in this Uke
I first played this Kala Slotted Headstock, acacia wood, tenor ukulele in a music store on Maui, when the sales man said, "try this one." I picked it up and played it and was amazed at the tone, and clarity of the notes. The strings may have something to do with that, but I have about 5-6 Ukuleles, all them Kamaka and each one was chosen for its sound, except a vintage one which I purchased from Ebay without playing it.

Since the first day that I tried this Kala Tenor Acacia ukulele I have tried other ukes of the same model in other stores and I find the consistency of sound from uke to uke amazing for this price range. The wood is beautiful to look at. The Slotted headstock is just plain cool, and it keeps in tune just as well as the conventional headstock and tuner combinations that I have tried.

I bought this Uke for my niece for Christmas and when I gave it to her, she was "speechless", turns out to be a figure of speech because she was absolutely thrilled and made a lot of non-speech sounds to make up for her "speechless" condition. I bought this ukulele from Hawaii Music Supply and it received the free set up that comes with every ukulele that they sell. Right out of the box it played beautifully. I got it with the Low G and couldn't have been more pleased. . .But my niece was absolutely thrilled and just seeing the joy on her face made my day.

Great choice for my first uke!
After playing guitar for many years, I finally decided to try the ukulele. After much research, I settled on this Kala Acacia Tenor model. And after playing it for a month I am really pleased with it. It has a great sound, and a lovely look and feel. As a woodworker, I noticed a few surface blemishes on the finish (that don't affect the playing), but other than that it is a well made instrument for the price, and I would recommend it to anyone!

not the best value for the price and not the worst!
I received my Kala asac-t two days ago 11/27/12. The action was so high you could have flown a biplane between the fretboard and strings and still had room to for stunts! The neck joint had a obvious high spot on it that could not be overlooked. this from what I have read and herd from HMS is not uncommon for this slot head! I was not stoked! I sent it back 15 minutes after getting it! I then purchased the Pono.

The Pono -AT is the same price. no bells and whistles on it but it blows the Kala out of the water for ease of play, TONE and accurate tuning! The ukulele even has a tress-rod in it! best $349 ukulele in the world! get it and you will not be sorry. Do you want a ukulele to "stare at from a far" or do you want to play and make music? Two ukuleles, two options!

It's beautiful, it sounds amazing, and it is a joy to play.
I have played this same model ukulele without any setup and it is a great ukulele. However, with the addition of the setup from Hawaii Music Supply it is beyond great, I didn't want to say awesome because it is so over used, but really - it's awesome! I can't pass by it without picking it up and playing it.

It's beautiful, it sounds amazing, and it is a joy to play.

For those of you thinking about buying it elsewhere, I cannot tell you how much of a difference the setup makes. I highly recommend you buy it here; you will not be disappointed. And it really doesn't take long to get it once you order it.

Great Uke that you can buff out to gloss!
I love this uke but I really did not like dull finish. I read some articles about buffing the finish to gloss. I used 3000 grit sandpaper and Scratch Out polish. Lightly sand the finish ( I left the neck alone) dull. I applied the Scratch Out with a the orbital polisher and polished to the gloss I wanted. I loved the final gloss finish! You can see the beautiful grain!

I wouldn't do this to any ukulele's finish but it will work on this model.

This uke sounds great and now looks awesome! One of my favorites!

    One of Kala's Best Models
One of Kala's best ukuleles, and for good reason - it sounds, feels, looks - and even smells great! Ive had this model for over a year and a half now (my first uke) and did a LOT of research before deciding what to get. All the cheapies that I tried at my local music stores were very dissatisfying because the tone seemed off and they didn't sound "uke-ish" to me, if you know what I mean. I couldn't afford a Hawaiian-made solid koa uke, but I still wanted that sound and tone. I drove my family crazy as I quite literally spent all my free time for about six months researching ukes online, listening to samples and reading reviews. What I came away with was my best bets for the best sound in an affordable range were either the Kala Solid Lacewood or this one (I now have one of each, as well as a Kala Koa Cedartop Gloss). All three were set up by staff employed at Hawaii Music Supply and all three are wonderful!

Added benefit - this uke's tone improves with age, like a fine wine! A year and a half into playing this one, and I swear it keeps sounding better and better!

    Awesome
This review is from a newbie that's only been playing for 8 months with a starter Makala.

    Pros:

Having watched many Youtube reviews of this product, I must say it looks so much better in person. It is really is a stunning uke. The decorations are very tasteful. I especially like the slotted headstock which is made from two layerings of wood so you can see the contour.

The uke is noticeably heavier than my Makala- which by comparison now feels like it's made of paper.

The uke is so much more resonant than the Makala. I've read numerous times on the Internet how a solid wood uke sounds "fuller" than a plywood uke but I was really surprised at how much of a difference there was.

    Cons:

Even after setup I find the saddle to be high. As a result notes low on the fretboard are much more difficult to control. On the other hand I can imagine that if the action went lower there is an increasing chance that the upper frets will develop buzz over time, which is something my Makala started developing in 6 months. I'll update this review in a month to see if I get used to the setup.

The chrome tuners are bit too chromy (blingy) for me given how all the other decorations look kind of "folksy".

There are some glue issues so the joint between the neck and the body isn't perfectly smooth.

    Other thoughts:

I've read in numerous books and online resources that it's important to get a uke that you really like to look at AND sounds great, because it will motivate you to keep playing it. Well for the first time in 8 months I finally understand why. This thing is so attractive you can't help but want to pick it up all the time. And once you pick it up you are rewarded with really sweet tone. I really wish I had purchased this uke from the start!
