This is one of 5 different ukes we just got from Rebel, each one an original. They ironically grouped these models under the name N.E.O.(Not Even Original). Peng explains their theory on this further down the page, but the bottom line is that these ukes are each unique but all have a wonderful voice.

The Alchemist was a recent custom offering from Rebel in limited numbers. The sound and quality has impressed those that got to try it, but at two thousand dollars it exceeded the budget many have. This new tenor has similar specs, but with a full solid spruce top, solid rosewood sides and back and offset soundhole. The tone is also very much like the Alchemist and we are able to offer it for much less cost to you.

We asked Rebel owner Peng to give us some thoughts on the creation of this model and why they decided to call it the "Not Even Original".

N.E.O. (Not Even Original) “It is better to be good than to beoriginal.” once said Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, German-born American Architect, 1886-1969.He’s the person who made “Less is more” so well known. Neo comes from the ancient Greek word meaning young or new. This project was originated based on the three driving forces. First, to make a prototype by creating something new from the limited resources using controlled variables. Second, to build responsive ukuleles for different playing style. We believe that good sound is subjective and can vary. Third, to build semi-custom ukuleles at an affordable price range but yet very unique in style. We will not build the same style after this run so customers who support us will get a one-off unique-designed ukulele. That’s our way to say thank you for being the Rebel’s supporters. “Beyond Natural Selection,” our motto comes from Charles Darwin's Theory of Evolution by natural selection. It said, to survive is to adapt. If a species fails to adapt to its environment, eventually it will die and extinct! Evolution may take extremely long time to see changes so we mimic that theory but put it in a shorter time span. The word “Original” is like a mantra and a highly desirable trait that designers would go to great lengths to pursuit. Once they found it, they seemed to get trapped in that mindset - being original being stagnant. Ironically, the “Original” seems to be vey faithful but at the same time, it’s a silly rule that proves itself to be dangerous to creativity. In the postmodern era, there seems to be an invisible force behind people pushing them to be unique, to find their own identity and to find their place in the society to be even recognizable.
Again, ironically, it’s the society that rolls itself back to the past whether it’s the retro style in music, fashion, beauty, design, etc. The world has come so far in the past few decades but what really changes are that we all look more alike nowadays. “Not Even Original” is because it’s not just an original. It’s totally something else. It’s not just a prototype to make more copies after. It’s the possibility to discover something new from old. “There is nothing new under the sun.” We keep asking ourselves this question and profoundly contemplating what our identity really is. We don't know the answer. There might not even be the answer. But to say the least we always keep changing, keep adapting and avoid getting trapped in the past. Being original is nothing to us. What excites us is the possibility to discover new things, new paths and to reach new heights. We don’t believe in the one and only highest point. The same goes for beauty. That’s the Rebel’s N.E.O!

Our goal as a store is to carry the absolute best ukuleles in the world. We are proud to offer you this ukulele, not just because it's very cool and different, but because of it's precise intonation, amazing big sound, and effortless playability.

Extra Options

One of the options for this ukulele is to trade out the Herco HE-360 included humidifier for the more expensive Oasis Ukulele Humidifier (OH-18 or OH-5+) at a discount. This is required if you live in a low humidity area (parts of California, Nevada, Arizona, etc.) or also areas with winter seasons, especially if you heat the air in your house. For more info refer to the Ukulele Care link at the bottom of this page. If you think you need to humidify the instrument, then you also need a hard case for a humidifier to properly work, and you need to maintain the humidifier by refilling it as needed.

After adding this instrument to your cart, you can still create your own package by adding a case or accessories from the website.

Under the Accessories tab you can also customize this instrument by adding strap button(s) or your choice of pickup for plugging in. We recommend the MiSi pickup for this ukulele.

Setup Options

Current Turnaround Time: Amount of time it takes before shipment-

Full Setup: 10-14 Business Days

Basic Quality Control: 2-3 Days

BASIC QUALITY CONTROL covers inspecting the instrument for any major defects that would have been missed by the factory and any faults in construction that could potentially damage or limit the functionality of the instrument over time. Any defective instruments are rejected and replaced.  We make sure that each Ukulele meets the basic standard for a brand new instrument and will be ready to play once you receive it. A final cleanup is also included after inspection before packing and shipment.

Full Setup - FREE for all Ukuleles $399 and over / $20.00 for Ukuleles from $300-399 / $30.00 for Ukuleles Under $300

Includes:

-Overall QC evaluation: To find defects in construction as well as to get an overall view of the instrument and note the areas that need extra attention and adjustment during the setup.

-Saddle Adjustment: The height of the saddle is lowered to reduce the distance between the strings and the fretboard, making it easier to play than the factory setup, especially higher up the fretboard.

-Nut Slot Adjustment: The depth, width, and angle of the nut slots are adjusted to create a more comfortable playing experience especially on the lower frets.

-Fret Dressing: After adjusting the nut and saddle heights, high spots in the fretboard or uneven frets will potentially cause fret buzz, dead spots, or other unwanted problems. The frets are filed to create a more consistent level across the fretboard. We then crown the frets to return their rounded curvature back to the top of each fret creating a clear contact point for each string. We then smooth and polish the frets and condition the fingerboard to bring them back to new condition.

-Final Cleanup: We always do a final overall cleanup of the instrument to make sure it is in new condition and ready to play before it is prepared for shipment.

Rush Setup & Delivery - Additional $50.00
The RUSH SETUP AND DELIVERY service is for customers who would still like to receive everything included in the full setup but on a shorter time frame. One of our setup technicians will work overtime outside of normal business hours to complete the setup within 2-3 days of the order being placed and immediately hand it over to the shipping department for packing and shipment. The $50.00 rush charge is in addition to the cost of the full setup.

Additional services (see individual product listings to add these services to your order)
