Pono ATD - Acacia Tenor Deluxe

Quarter Sawn Solid Acacia Wood -Gloss Finish

This model from Pono gives us quality and musicality never seen in this price range. The ATD is gorgeous in every way. Rich tone, great sustain, perfect feel and fascinating exotic Acacia wood.

The ATD is dynamic. It will work with any style of music, any popular set of string. Perfect with a low G, showing off a robust lower range, or with a high G, still giving us a suprising depth. This all solid wood tenor ukulele has it all! A refined classic style, glossy exotic woods, and a beautiful voice. This Pono is an excellent value on a professional quality tenor ukulele. It has less flash than some of the other models, but the wood is gorgeous and the tone is very warm and sweet, and the construction is meticulous. We are sure you will agree!

A key feature in Pono tenor and baritone models is the dual-action adjustable truss rod. This is used to stabilize and adjust the lengthwise forward curvature (also called relief), of the neck. It can be adjusted from inside the soundhole with an allen wrench provided. Over time and with environmental changes, it is a very useful option to have. It is easy to adjust with little room for error.

Acacia is a family of trees that Hawaiian Koa belongs to. This is not Hawaiian Koa but comes from a very similar species. Ko'olau is exacting in their woods being quarter sawn and dried properly. This is an essential factor to the precision you experience with the Pono ATD.

This Gloss finish really sets this model off... Amazing to look at...BUT, all of that is worthless without the real key to this value...tonal character! Very rich, extremely warm. You're gonna' love it!

Photos and video are stock typical.

Beautiful uke, excellent, trustworthy service
I have been playing a cheap laminate soprano ukelele for a year. It has given me huge enjoyment but I decided it was time to upgrade. After listening to so many of the excellent demos on the ukelele side I decided to get the Pono acacia deluxe. Andrew recommended some strings for the sound I was looking for and advised the low G stringing which I was a bit apprehensive about but sounds wonderful. This uke looks really beautiful and sounds warm and rich. The set up seems perfect to me.
However the most important part of this review is praise for the excellent customer service. I needed the ukelele by a specific date. Due to a small communication error it was getting a bit touch and go as to whether it would be in time and I contacted Joel. There were no excuses, just a genuine apology and thereafter he could not have gone further out of his way to make sure that everything worked out. The ukelele arrived in perfect condition and in time and Joel made everything right and the communication was excellent. I felt I was in really trustworthy hands and would not hesitate to use the Ukelele Sitein the future. In fact I'm already eyeing up a new soprano!
Thanks for saving the day and the great set up. I'm loving it.

Great instrument, Great Service
I have been playing for a year and have slowly developed as I am self taught. My £35 laminate soprano has served me well and I still love it but this solid wood acacia tenor is something else. The rounded tone and depth and sustain make me sound a lot better than I am. Andrew recommended a low G stringing and whilst I was apprehensive I trusted his wisdom and it does sound great. It looks gorgeous too and there is not a blemish on it. The set up appears perfect to me - certainly no vibrations and fretting is easy. I am certainly going to enjoy it for years to come.
Now, I was promised that this would arrive in time for my friend in Florida to bring it to the UK. The date got closer and I was beginning to panic. I skyped Joel in the end (who was setting it up) and, on realising the the message had not got to him, went out of his way to put things right and get it to Florida the next day. No excuses - just excellent customer service (as seems to be experienced by everyone on this site). Thanks Guys for the advice, set-up and for saving the day! I have a feeling I will be back soon.

I couldn't be happier!
I spend many hours on line looking for ukulele's when I came across this one from The Ukulele Site. All of the positive reviews convinced me that this was one great Uke, and I totally agree! I couldn't be happier! I'm also very, very impressed with the set-up that they do to all of the Ukes that they sell.

Great instruments and great service. I am a customer for life.
I just opened up my Pono ATD yesterday and I am in awe of its beauty and sound. Eli went the extra effort to match a uke to the description I wrote with my order and I could not be happier with the one he selected for me. He noted that he opened 15 ukes before he found a match. The Pono ATD is exceptional in looks and sound, the action is great and intonation is spot on. I love this ukulele!

I had no idea an Ukulele could sound like this!
The ukuleles I currently have, I thought, were good, until I did a lot of research and wound up working with the outstanding team of folks at HMS to get this Pono ATD Gloss Tenor. Andrew could not have been more helpful in guiding me through this purchase and HMS did a flawless job in setting the uke up with low action for me. When I pulled it out of the box, I spent the first several minutes just staring at it because the finish, and the look of the wood is gorgeous and it arrived in flawless condition. When I played it, I was, and still am, blown away by the warmth and fullness of the tone, the sustain, and the overall beautiful sound of this ukulele. The quality to price ratio is unbeatable. I feel like I got a $1,000+ ukulele here for just a little north of $400. The folks at HMS will have to explain to me what the improvement would be in buying a higher end ukulele. That may be my inexperience talking, but at what point can you no longer make it sound any better? If this one is anywhere near your price point, buy it and get ready, you won't be able to put it down. I will be doing all my future ukulele business with HMS. Great job!

Best value quality for the Dollar
Very simply you will not find another solid body Ukulele at this price point that offers as much in regards to tone and playability. Just an outstanding instrument.

Five Stars
The quality is extremely good.
The price at HMS cannot be beat.
The value, well, unless you are quite lucky and visit thousands of garage sales I find it difficult to believe you could obtain a finer ukulele for the price.
Spend the extra for the Oasis humidifier, my bridge started to come up, which HMS and Pono repaired at no cost and very little turnaround time.
Fret-ends are a common issue but if you have a steady hand and a diamond fingernail file this can be remedied permanently without harming the finish, just get your ALOHA on and go slow and easy.
I love this ukulele and you will too.

beautiful tone & great craftsmanship!
I do not typically write reviews, but I have to here. This ukulele has the most wonderful sustain and harmonics of any I have played. The craftsmanship from PONO on this is impeccable. The gloss finish is beautiful and not too thick & flashy. The acacia wood on mine has a different pattern than the pics of course but this thing is just as gorgeous as the pics on this website, if not more so. The neck is smooooth, no sharp frets stays in perfect tune, etc. A beautiful & very solid feeling instrument and also very comfortable to play. The setup by HMS is insane, I was blown away that I could actually pull off the harmonic picking that they show in the first sample video, and I am by no means a professional player! Big smiles and much Aloha with this ukulele!! :) Thank you!

Can't put it down!
This was my first Uke purchase coming from a guitar background. I did a lot of research prior to buying, and decided the Pono ATD gloss tenor from HMS was going to be it! I took a chance on this Uke, as no local dealers in my area carried Pono's. What a wonderful instrument! I've been over it with a fine tooth comb, and can't find a single flaw. The wood grain and finish are gorgeous, with tonal qualities that can only improve with consistent playing. The neck is a bit thicker than other Ukes I tried, but still seems thin after playing a guitar! Tuners are high quality and hold pitch quite well for a new Uke. My only complaint was the Ebony fingerboard appeared a bit dry on arrival, however can only improve with a little lemon oil. Overall I don't think I could find a better quality Uke in this price range. Thanks to HMS for making this happen! My Uke set-up was spot on, and far better than any guitar I've ever owned. Your website and sound samples are wonderful, with unmatched customer service. I'll definitely be back for more in the coming years. I'm hooked!

Impressed
I play guitar and my decision to buy this ukulele was mostly based on reading the reviews. Well I received it today and found it to be just what I expected. A truly beautiful looking and sounding Ukulele. I have never purchased a guitar from a music store that was set-up. Set-up was always an additional price after purchase. The people at the Ukulele Site took the time to set this one up before shipping. I also purchased a tuner and found the intonation to be dead on and the string height to be very playable. All in all, I don't think you will find a better deal then this one. I also bought a hard shell case and had a pick-up installed. It comes with a humidifier and two day shipping Fedex. How can you go wrong? Love it!

Great uke for a reasonable price.
I had decided to buy a uke and went to a store in San Francisco that different people had said knowledgeable folks worked there. I really liked the Pono ATD Gloss Acacia Tenor. I came home, went on-line & found this site and the same uke was much cheaper. It came fairly quickly and upon opening the case, I was extremely pleased with its appearance. It is beautiful and everyone who sees it appreciates its looks and build quality. Also, the sound is great. It isn"t loud, but has a very nice warm tone. If you want a great uke without paying a premium price, this is it!

No regrets on this one.
I love, I mean LOVE this uke. But HMS is the reason I'm leaving this review. In thirty years of buying instruments I've never had one so perfectly set up right out of the box. It's a joy to play. HMS has earned my business. Next time I'm in the market for something musical, I'll look here first.

Big!
It just arrived today. This ukulele seems huge to me. It's my first tenor, but that's not what I mean. It sounds huge. The sustain rings and rings. It is geautiful to look at. The gloss finish sloks like the whole instrument is made of glass. Intonation is right on. This is a major step up in instrument quality from what I have been playing. Now to practice so my skills follow suit.

THE place to buy your Ukes
About three months ago and after careful research I ordered a Pono-ATD Gloss Acacia Tenor from TheUkuleleSite.com to add to my worthy collection. Every time I pick it up I'm amazed at the quality and sound for the money. This is pro level sound for an intermediate price. The crew at ThuUkuleleSite.com are world class! I wouldn't buy a Uke anywhere else now.

I love this Uke!
I am a guitarist that is starting on ukulele, and I didn't want my first uke to be a "starter" uke. After much research on this site and ukuleleunderground.com, I ordered the Pono -ATD - Gloss Acacia Tenor during the 2012 Christmas season and received it in the Cincinnati area 6 days later. I was surprised and thrilled to receive it so quickly during their busiest time of year. I also ordered the hard case and installation of the MiSi active pickup. Everything is flawless - beautiful finish, perfect setup, great sound - acoustic and plugged in. Watch the video on this site that demonstrates their setup process. These guys are the real deal. Andrew answered my questions before and after purchase and provided amazing customer service. I couldn't be more happy. I am trying the "Worth Strings - BT Brown Tenor" with this and so far so good. Next will be the "Aquila Strings - Tenor". Merry Christmas to me! :-)

Very Satisfied
I purchased this ukulele about four months ago and have not been disappointed.
When I opened the case the instrument looked great, the gloss finish and wood grain were beautiful. I’m picky when it comes to cosmetics and construction so I started looking for flaws. This is a very finished product, joints, hardware, frets, tuners, wood grain, everything smooth with a good solid fit. It plays in tune and stays in tune.
As far as sound and playability, that’s up to the individual, but I am very satisfied. I'm using Worth strings and it plays warm and smooth.

Great sounding tenor uke
Although not as striking as the picture on the website, it plays and sounds great. Lots of sustain, nice wide neck and a great case makes this a solid value. I especially appreciate the setup which made it immediately pleasing to play.
The only aspect I don't like is the wound C string - I requested and got a G that is not wound but expected all to be non-wound; my error, but it grates on the ear and seems unnecessary. That is of course easily changed out.

Great First Uke!
I bought this after a month of research for a good first uke. I knew if I got a really cheap one I'd be done with it in a month but didn't want to spend 1K in case I decided it wasn't for me. After 2 months of playing it and a couple lessons I LOVE this little guy! I got it to play tunes for my baby who really loves it as well. We play and sing every night before bed now. The only down side is it's a gateway drug and now I want to try out some really fancy ukes to compare! :D Can't go wrong with this uke.

Beautiful Quality Instrument
Received my Pono ATD as a Christmas present, and it is beautiful! I prefer a smooth satin finish but I'll adapt, LOL. The look, fit and finish of this instrument will knock your socks off. The hard O'ahu case fits it like a tight fuzzy glove. My other instruments have cedar, mahagony, and spruce tops, and it took a while for my ears and sensibilities to adjust to the different resonance of the solid acacia. Strumming, I was a bit disappointed at first, but when I started finger picking I was wowed. I soon found it was best to be aggressive with this little beauty, and the notes will ring out strong, full, loud and proud. Of course, strings matter, and some day I'll try out the other sets that came with it. Merry Christmas.

This is just a right one!
This is the first Uke I got from HMS. And this is just as good as I imagine!

It sounds very balanced, warm, round and sweet. I just like the gloss finish which looks durable but just thin enough to let the wood to vibrate. VEry nice work indeed.

Also, I think there was something about the setting, I have played on PONOs at other shops, but the feeling was just different. The setting by HMS seems just right which playing on is just easy and comfortable.

Thanks HMS and I am really looking forward to make my next order very soon. Thanks!!

Excellent Ukulele, couldn't be happier!
Wow, what an excellent ukulele. I was debating between the AT and the ATD (gloss finish, ebony fingerboard and bridge) and settled on the ATD.

At first glance, the instrument is absolutely stunning! The grain pattern is beautiful and the coloring is actually a lot less red (I think they photos on this site aren't properly color corrected). If you want to see better pics, go to ukuleleunderground.com/forums and search for pono ATD. I've posted several pics under my alias MikeR.

On closer inspection, I don't see any cosmetic flaws. The only thing I noticed is that when I took off the wound C string to replace it with a non-wound it left a small indentation in the bridge. But I believe these instruments come with wound C strings.

The tuners feel nice and I like the smaller tuning buttons. All but the A string tuners on mine feel well lubricated and easy to turn; but even the A string feels good, just takes a little more pressure. I was surprised by how quickly the strings settled in and stayed in tune (two days of playing and I can tune them and forget 'em)

The intonation is excellent almost all the way up the fretboard and the tone is very mellow. I will probably change strings in a month or two to the Ko'olau Alohi's to see if I can balance out the mellowness a little bit.

The neck is a little thicker than some others i've played, but maybe that's due to the truss rod inside (one of the reasons I liked this uke). I've found the thicker neck makes barre chords easier for me. It feels really comfortable.

For 469 dollars, I couldn't be happier. I feel like I am playing something much nicer than that. I also had HMS install a MiSi pickup and upgraded to the hardshell case. This is an investment I think you'll want to protect!
