Looks: Although this is not all blinged out with fancy inlay or a rosette, it is stunning to look at. Whenever I pull it out people are blown away with how pretty it is. The wood grain very beautiful and very three dimensional. As you move it the grain changes and with the high gloss it just shines like a jewel.. The only thing I am not 100% happy with are the plastic bridge pins. they are not horrible, just not up to the rest of the quality of the rest of the uke. Fit and Finish: I have looked for any flaws and I find almost none. The uke is very solid and you can tell a lot of care is taken when building these ukes. Everything is super smooth and glossy, with no frets sticking out the sides and all the frets are dressed super nicely. One big thing I see in high gloss finishes is pooling, this has no signs of it at all. The bracing is so good that there is almost no pull on the top causing any bellying, this could also be attributed to the string through bridge. The head stock joint is a little weird with the hard line on the back where the wood meets. Not a big deal. It has to deal with 8-strings and needs more wood. Sound: The koa usually makes ukuleles more mellow, and that is why I went with this one over a spruce top. this uke is not really mellow, just balanced in its tone. the highs and lows are confident with the mids lagging a little. Making a very sweet tone that makes this ukulele sing. One of the reasons I purchased this was to have the added low notes. when playing with a group, it really helps to fill out the chords with the low and even the high C Volume: Its an 8-string ukulele, it is loud. Not banjo ukulele loud, but it is loud. This will over power most "normal" ukes in a group. Intonation: PERFECT, as it should be with a uke in this price range. Plays perfect all the way up the whole neck. Keep in mind that with the low G and high C some chords will sound off or weird. Feel: When you pick it up it is head heavy, not a surprise with the 8 tuners, but balanced when you hold it. I have had no issue without a strap while standing up. The biggest challenge with an 8-string is holding down all the strings to make nice clean chords. This uke is setup so perfectly with nice low action that it is almost effortless to make a chord, your fingers will hurt after a bit, but it is worth the pain for a bit. After a few sessions my fingers were use to 8-strings. The neck is pretty thick, but I have found that it is easy to hold and it aids in making chords and adds comfort over long jam sessions. Summary: I love the Kanilea K1-PT8, it is part of my main stable of ukuleles and is one of my most useful and best sounding ukes. Not all songs call for it, but I have found that it adds something special to so many that I play it about 3 out of every 5 songs.
