Pono MT Solid Mahogany Tenor!

Having our workshop in the same building as Ko'olau and Pono is so convenient for us. We all agree and truly believe that you can't find a better tenor for this price!

This is an amazing new price point for a pro level ukulele with all solid woods and beautiful tones. Ko'olau just got this model back in stock after being out for months and we are excited to again offer an instrument at this level of quality AND affordability! Made from all solid quarter sawn mahogany, the MT produces a very clean and full sound. It has plenty of volume and punch, but really accentuates the sweet tones that make the ukulele so wonderful. The sustain and fullness in the high register are amongst the best you will find. We are positive that you will fall in love with the sound look and feel of this tenor ukulele.

The Pono MT has a bone nut and saddle, Ko'olau geared tuning keys, and a dual action truss rod for adjusting the neck. These are features that no other company is offering in this price range! But just looking at the "specs" won't really tell you how good an ukulele is. The great thing about this instrument is the sound and feel. It has a sound that would rival the most expensive ukes on the market, and after we are done with a final setup the ease of play is spot on. This is exactly what every player needs to become passionate about playing. If you were considering a tenor in this price range, this may very well be the best option you will find. Get one while they're in stock!!

The MT is a simple look with less "frills" than other pono models. But it has the same great tone. The Pono MT is the starting point for someone in search of a professional grade tenor ukulele.

A key feature in all of the Pono tenor and baritone models is the dual-action adjustable truss rod. This is used to stabilize and adjust the lengthwise forward curvature (also called relief), of the neck. It can be adjusted from right inside the soundhole with an allen wrench provided. This is something you will probably not need to adjust. But over time and with humidity changes, it is a very useful option to have, and a very easy thing to adjust with little room for error.

Other cases can also be chosen there.

One of the options for this ukulele is to trade out the Herco HE-360, included humidifier, for the more expensive Oasis Ukulele Humidifier (OH-18) at a discount. This is required if you live in a low humidity area.(parts of California, Nevada, Arizona, etc..) or also areas with winter seasons, especially if you are heating the air in your house. For more info refer to the ukulele care link at the bottom of this page. If you think you need to humidify the instrument, then you also need a hard case for a humidifier to properly work, and you need to maintain the humidifier by refilling it as needed.

Another option is to switch from high G tuning (like in the video) to low G tuning. This is a blog article discussing it if you are not sure whether you want High or Low G?

Terrific instrument!
I bought the Pono mahogany tenor a couple months ago. I wish I'd gotten it a long time ago. The quality of construction, sound, ease of playing, and appearance are just super. Never having played a tenor, I didn't realize how much easier it made the left hand. Having a little more room for the fingers makes chording much easier, especially barre chords. The result is a cleaner sound. I'm also playing more, since this is such a joy to play, and my playing has improved as a result. The setup by HMS was great, and I don't think it could be improved upon. I love the simple, elegant appearance, too. There's no b.s. about this instrument. You play it. It sounds great. Mine is strung low-G, and it sounds very warm and mellow. The folks at HMS do a great job and are a wonderful resource. My next instrument will come from here too.

Pono MT - Solid Uke
I'm a guitar player that decided to give playing the uke a try. Was recommended by the guys from Hawaii Music Supply to go with a Tenor.

Checked out their web site and really liked what the Pono MT had to offer. This uke actually has an adjustable truss rod and this was one of the selling points for me.

Went down to the Haleiwa shop to check out the Pono MT and AT ukes in person. The MT with all solid mahogany construction is warm and mellow while the AT with solid acacia construction is very bright.

I really like the warmer and mellower tone of the Pono MT so I ended up buying it. For the price, this uke can't be beat. It does not have a lot of bling going for it but in my opinion, there is beauty in simplicity.

When you pick this uke up you can feel its solid construction, especially in the neck. The neck is very beefy and feels great with the satin finish.

The set up is great as all of the frets were even and the action was set up perfect on the 12th fret.

It has a beefy neck but by no means is it hard to play. I'm a guitar player with fairly small hands and I have no trouble holding chords and moving up and down the fret board on this uke.

Within hours of brining this uke home I was learning some uke chords and actually strumming out a few songs. Totally satisfied with this uke as it makes learning how to play a real joy.

Should you buy this? Yeah, I think so
While this is a no frills instrument, that is exactly what makes it great. You can tell the focus was quality of construction. The sound and intonation is great, better than expected for this price range. The neck is comfortable, the wood grain is elegantly simplistic, and the body depth seems to me deeper. The wood grain surprises me the most on this instrument, unstained mahogany is beautiful and shows off the natural pattern of the mahogany (be careful cause it nicks easily, I recommend going MTD if you are a frequent traveler or panic when get dings/scratches).

It's worth the price because the setup, and because Pono is a step above the rest at this price point. You won't be disappointed. Recommend for: Everyone

This has taken care of my UAS! Sounds and plays beautifully! String it up with some Worth Clears and it takes the tone to a whole other level. Craftmanship and build are top notch. Feels like a "real" instrument, not a toy.

Soprano version of this uke is stellar
I just got the soprano version of this Pono, the MS. The quality of workmanship is outstanding and the sound is amazing. Volume and projection similar to lesser tenors. I am amazed at the resonance of a brand new instrument. The intonation is excellent for a soprano. Ultra high quality pretty mahogany. Set up is perfect without any fret buzz. Now I have to learn how to press very gently to avoid overstretching strings and distorting the chords. For a person with small or weak hands, this is the instrument to buy. Tiny work of art.

go for it guys!
I just got this beautiful uke 1 h ago. I like the solid build and satin finish of this MT. Awesome sound. I had a soprano uke to start with. Now I got this tenor as an entry level to pro-class build ukes. It will be definitely worth your money if you are in the same situation like where I was.

At last but no the least, the setup with low G is great and thank you HMS!

Great Uke !
OUTSTANDING!
Hello Mates ! In a word this is an (outstanding) Ukulele !
I would recommend that you save your $ and wait if you have to to buy the Pono MT. I've had the cheep/ less expensive laminate Ukue's and they are fine, but once you play this one you wont want to bother with the others- really ! I can compare this to the following and tell you that it is superior in every way:
Islander- AT, Islander -MT & Kala Solid mahogany Tenor, all good but not even close to the Pono MT
Aaron recommended this Uke and he was 100% correct. I'm not a snob about stuff and I always look for a good deal and I can tell you that while this Uke is a few bucks more that it is a good deal at this price.

Very high quality build, love the feel of the neck and larger frets, exceptional at this price, but what makes it even better is the set-up! Low action, no buzzes regardless of how hard the strum /pluck, even makes difficult chords easy!

So happy with this purchase!
I can't say enough good things about this uke! It was my 1st ever uke purchase. Since I couldn't see it in person, I did a fair amount of research online, read through slew of reviews, and listened to tons of Pono YouTube sound clips. In the end, I bought online thru The Ukulele Site for their set up. Their setup really makes all the difference! If I had to buy it all over again, I would buy this Pono over and over again!

This is a Beautiful uke. It sounds soooo beautiful.. it has almost a harp-like tone to it. I get tons of compliments on it wherever I play. It's an easy instrument to play as a beginner. I've never played a string instrument before, and I was scared a tenor uke might be too big for a petite girl like me... but no, it's a perfect uke for a beginner. I got it with a low G string, because I wanted to play more bossa nova/ jazz types of songs. The sound of this Pono goes perfectly with any jazz/ hawaiian songs.

Outplays ukes of much higher price ranges - Love it!
I have had a great experience with this instrument. It has outplayed every other uke that I have tried so far. And of course the Hawaii Music Supply set up that it came with is just the best! I have tried out instruments from the same price range as well as higher ($400-$500) prices at local music shops and so far none have them have even compared! The only problem I have experienced with this instrument is with the tuners (one of the pegs comes loose sometimes) but it really is a very minor concern when look at the big picture. This uke delivers an incredible sound for the price.

Pono MT
I 've been a guitar player for many years, and after finally trying a friend's Makala uke, I was determined to seriously look into purchasing a decent first uke. Much research led me to the Pono Mt and to Hawaii Music Supply.

For the price this is a well constructed instrument which is staight forward in terms of cosmetics, but has features such as the truss rod, which typically are found on higher end ukes. It sounds great and it stays in tune. HMS set it up beautifully and the intonation is spot on all the way up the neck. I was impressed that it was shipped from Hawaii to Massachusetts in two days!

Excellent tenor!
This ukulele gets glowing reviews. That's not for nothing. I bought this Pono with a pick-up installed (the MT-E) and received it in a lovely Ohua case.
This ukulele is really well finished and is a joy to play. Very nice satin finish that you just can not stop hugging and caressing.
I changed the strings though. I didn't like the strings it came with and put some Worth Clears with a low G on it. The Pono came to life immediately.

Lovely sounding ukulele well worth it's money!

Pono MT Satin Finish Tenor
I was looking for less expensive ukulele that I could use as a travel uke instead of my Ko'olau T2 Tenor. I was very surprised with my purchase. Although it is Ko'olau's import model, it has Ko'olau's high quality construction standards incorporated into it. I did notice that the solid mahagony body does not have the sustain of Koa but regardless the sound is still clean and bright. I have it strung with Worth Clear High G strings. It plays with ease and intonation is right on. The only thing I have added are strap buttons. I prefer Satin Finishes over Gloss because I believe Satin projects better sound than Gloss, but this is just my own opinion. If you are considering purchasing ukulele of good quality but are budget minded and want good continued customer service, you cannot go wrong by purcasing the Pono MT Tenor.

Smooth, mellow projection and great build.
I was so jealous of my girlfriends MT after hearing hers I had to get one for myself. I love how it sings, mellow and strong. This also feels good in the fret hand. Even though it may not have a glossy finish it is beautiful to look at. It almost seems as if the body is carved from a single piece of wood.

This is a really fine instrument, well build classy, with excellent projection. It is quite precise yet.

The only thing I may not like so much about this pono is that... being versatile, the sound may lack a bit of personality. But that's just me - and if you only want one ukulele, that's a good pick.

Just buy it
With so many glowing reviews it's obvious this is a fantastic instrument for the price.

I was reluctant at first as I find mahogany to be a boring and rather plain wood and went back and forth between this one and the Pono Acacia Tenor. In the end, sound won out and I went with this model and couldn't be happier.

My Pono is strung with Ko'olau Mahana strings which have a wound G and C string. The sound is mellow and just what I was looking for. I think I'll end up trying an unwound set of strings eventually for comparison as I'm not sure if I like the feel of the wound strings.

I will eventually be adding a concert uke to the collection and Pono will be at the top of the list of candidates.

Pono is Ono
Bought a Pono MT as an extra 'ukulele to lend to friends that come over. The 'ukulele plays great. HMS setup is amazing. Intonation is great up the fret board.

I've tried a various sting combination to find something I really like. I think I'm going to go back to the factory strings with the wound C. Bought a set of multicolored strings so may daughter could play Christmas carols on her winter break from college. Big mistake, I think the Pono is going off to college. Looks like my daughter outgrew her Kala soprano long neck.

The pono neck is nice to play. It comes with a built in truss rod, which might come in handy with a college kid as the new owner.

Flawless & Deep
I bought the Pono MT a couple of months ago and I'm astonished by the build quality of this little instrument.
I asked the guys at HMS to set it up with Log G strings of their choice, and came with koolau wounded 3rd and 4th, wich makes the Pono a wooden cannon, deep sounding, guitar style ukulele.
I was going to sum up my review by saying "best entry level solid wood ukulele" but its not fair to call this uke "entry level" since I think its quality and price can compare to more expensive ukes.

Flawless & Deep
I bought this beatiful instrument a couple of months ago. I asked to be strung with Low G setup, and left the string choice to the guys at HMS. They set it up with koolau's (don't know if Alohi's or Gold's) with 3rd and 4th wounded.
What can I say... The Pono + HMS set up = A wooden Cannon. Sounds really deep, almost like a classic guitar.
The other thing that surprised me was the flawless finish: no details at all, perfectly built instrument.
Last but not least, I got the "plug in" combo, just to have the chance to play plugged. With some reverb from the amp, the Pono sounds just heavenly.
I was tempted to sum up my review saying "best entry level solid wood tenor uke", but to call her "entry level" is just not fare. Lets say that for the buck, you can't get much more than the Pono MT.

Solid Value, great sound!
I bought the MT after speaking with Music Guy Mike about what my tastes were and roily how much I wanted to spend. After listening (and yes, they really do Listen to you at HMS), he hooked me up with a low G set-up for my new Pono MT.

First, the instrument is truly substantial, it is not flimsy, comfortable to hold, beautiful satin patina, an easy to play neck, flawless construction and deep, full voice and tone.

If you want to step up your game, if you want a truly great all-solid instrument at a fair and very reasonable price get the Pono MT. It's price range is not an unreasonable stretch for a beginner and it gets you off on the right foot from the very start. For more experienced players, the MT is a workhorse that doesn't disappoint. I absolutely love playing the MT.

Great Ukulele, Great Sound, Great Store
After much searching and corresponding with Andrew, I chose the Pono Mahogany Tenor ukulele with built in pickup. I liked the all solid wood, the adjustable neck, and the built in pickup. I waited several months for the Pono to come in. It had the usual high quality set up and was strung with Koolau Golds in high G.

It was well worth the weight. This little instrument always brings a smile to my face. It is smooth, has great sustain, and a shimmering sound. The neck is just perfect, and finished nicely. It feels good just to pick it up. The pickup is great, requiring little to no eq to produce a great sound that makes people stop in their tracks the first time they hear it.

The Pono stays in tune well, feels good to play with the satin finish, and sounds great. I think it's a great value and a great instrument. Buying from Hawaii Music Supply was a no brainer. Between Andrew and Aaron, everything was seamless. My friend was so impressed he has bought several ukuleles from HMS and plans on visiting the store on a spring trip to Hawaii in 2013.

Don't hesitate to buy a Pono from HMS. You'll be glad you did.

Solid mid-range mahogany tenor at a great price even though foreign competitors have similar ukes at a lower price.
My cousin bought this uke for me last summer for Christmas (in Australia). To this day, I still use this ukulele as my main uke. The quality of the wood and th finish is great although not quite as stellar as my cousin's Ko'olau and Kanile'a. Being mahogany, the sound is a bit darker which I like but I think I prefer the brighter sound of Koa a bit more. Being a satin finish, i was worried about the possibility of scratches and dings appearing all over the instrument but that hasn't been too much of a problem. Although Islander and Cordoba make similar ukulele's for a seemingly lower price, the quality is unmatched to the superiority of the Pono. I heard that there was a truss rod inside of the uke but I can't seem to find it.

Downsides are that the neck seems a bit fat (although thats personal preference). The wider nut makes it easier for fingerpicking but a little more difficult or less enjoyable to strum.

Nevertheless, the guys at Ko'olau have created a great entry-level instrument for all people at a great price. Thanks to HMS for their excellent setup and service.

I love the simplicity of this model ukulele because I can worry much less about its appearance than its sound, which is very warm by the way. I may not know better yet, but the g-string that came with my model sharpens when I play while it's tuned an octave below normal GCEA pitch.

I'd had a cheap Ibanez soprano uke for a while and was looking to upgrade and could not be happier with this Pono. The tenor size provides a nice deep tone that records great and accompanies other acoustic instruments well. Great Instrument from a great store
I am rating Hawaii Music Supply as much as the instrument, as this is my first Ukulele and I do not really have anything to compare it with. (I am a concertina player) This is a very simple, but beautiful instrument. It has good sound quality, holds its tuning well, and is easy to play.

Hawaii Music Supply exceeded my expectations. Shipping was fast and simple. Their set up of the instrument was done well and it was ready to play right out of the box, with a quick tuning. Their free resources on line make it relatively easy to start teaching yourself how to play.

Huge step-up from my $100 Costco Uke
Several years ago, I purchased my first ukulele (Lyon by Washburn LU5 Concert size) at a Costco store in Maui. After a couple years, I wanted to get a solid top tenor. I originally thought I wanted the Acacia model, but after playing both, I loved the mellowness of the Mahogany so I purchased this. I have since restrung it with the Ko'olau Golds which are slightly brighter strings and I love it even more! It's got a mix of bright and mellowness which I adore.

Beautifully made tenor uke.
I'm very happy with my Pono MT. The workmanship is great and it is very easy to play. The string action was well adjusted and the intonation is spot on. This uke lends itself well to fingerstyle playing. Mine has the passive pickup which works well plugged straight into a Fishman Loudbox Mini amp even without a pre-amp. This is probably one of the least expensive professional quality ukes you will find. I'm still searching for the best strings to give me the sound I want. I'm going to try the Worth Browns next.

lovely sound
I purchased the Pono because of the brand name. Since I do not live near any ukulele shops, and had to rely on the internet to hear the sound, the decision was hard. It was between this and the islander. I own a solid koa Lanikai and have been playing one year, so I feel I am a novice at hearing subtilities in different ukuleles. The mahogany holds the sound longer and is louder and i like it for certain songs. The pono has a flawless satin finish and has a nice feel. Unlike my Lanikai, it did not need any adjustments upon arrival. I think this was a good decision and I am very happy with my Pono.

Very nice, great finish, awesome sound
This was my first tenor uke after having relatively cheap soprano ($25) and concert (120) ukes. It was such a great leap up in quality, I was surprised at how well the uke was constructed; very solid and beautiful. The sound was very articulate and strong. I had it strung with Kala Pearls, which created the squeak you would only find on metal string guitars. It was great and very unique. I loved it! The satin finish on it was even and smooth, very good to touch and very aesthetically pleasing, despite its simple design.
HMS did an absolutely great job of setting up the ukes. Along with that, you can never go wrong with Pono!

Perfect choice for your second or first uke.
I purchased this tenor based on the videos and reviews on this site and elsewhere online. I found the build quality to be very good, the neck is a little wider than my previous uke (a lanikai tenor) which I feel is more comfortable. The tuners work great and the set up done from the HMS store was perfect. I love the simple looks of this Pono Tenor, the satin finish feels soft and smooth, and the logo and ebony headstock plate are a nice touch. My Pono tenor played perfectly right out of the box. The sound is very warm and I find it a joy to play. I have owned this uke for six months and it seems to sound better everyday.
If I had anything negative at all to say it would only be that the satin finish is a little on the soft side so be careful of scratching the finish because that can happen fairly easy..At this price, I bought this uke to play everyday and a few dings and scratches have only made me bond with my Pono even more. But if you are the type of person who happens to be somewhat clumsy and will lose your mind over worrying about keeping your uke perfect you may want to look at the deluxe model with the gloss finish for a little added protection.
The Pono tenor is a great choice for anyone looking for an everyday player, or looking to upgrade to thier first all-wood uke.

an affordable Pono, go for it
You dont have to go far on the Ukulele Site to find the praises of Pono. And this model does not disappoint even though it is offered at a price point well below the others. You dont get a fancy shinny instrument here with a lot of ornament, but you do get a very nice Pono with rich and warm tones and with good volume. There is nothing dull, mumbled or muted about its notes.

All Pono's come with a truss rod and though I have not had to use it, i do have another Uke where I wish I could. So I definitely see the need for this feature. When you need it, the options are not good unless you have one.

I have an Islander concert with laminate mahogany that has nice tone for the price point. When HMS' sale came up on its popular models, I jumped at the chance to get a solid mahogany ukulele.

I liked the look and reputation of Pono and my playing can't justify a Ko'olau yet, so I took a chance on the MT. I was not disappointed. The uke has a lovely warmth and mellowness that is a nice contrast to the brightness of koa. I changed the strings to Worth clears with a low G on the endorsement of Andrew (thanks again) and I find that it enhances what makes the tone of mahogany so appealing.

I ordered the uke with a Pono passive pickup installed and played it clean through a Vox AC4TV for fun. No problems, just nice, clean tone. Good for playing softer stuff by John Mayer, Jason Mraz, Bruno Mars, etc. Hawaiian songs still sound good, but just not as bright.

The finish and quality of construction is very high as you might expect where the final setup is done on O'ahu at Ko'olau. I have looked over the uke thoroughly and cannot find any flaws. I find the fret ends not as comfortable as on my Keli'i ukes, but that's just a matter of preference.

Since it is a solid uke, it comes with a free humidifier courtesy of HMS. Hard to find service where the company continues to answer questions after the sale like Andrew did with me. I have no hesitation recommending this ukulele and definitely recommend purchasing from HMS. For context, this is the third instrument I have bought from HMS and had delivered to Canada.
