Pepe Romero - Spruce/ Rosewood Custom Tenor
$2,500.00 |or$227/month*

Growing up surrounded by guitars made by Torres, Esteso, Santos Hernandez, Hauser, and Miguel Rodriguez set the standard for how a guitar should be made.

Pepe decided at the age of 18 to dedicate himself to guitar building. He studied with Dake Traphagen and recieved guidance from the finest classical builders including Miguel Rodriguez, J.L. Romanillos, Manuel Contreras II, Yuris Zeltins and Edmund Blöchinger. Early on though, he designed his own voicing. A reverse fan bracing system that has proven to be genius. He has been 3 years backordered on guitars for the last few years, but couldn't help falling in love with the ukulele. And what a blessing!

We have been eagerly awaiting this wood combination from him for quite a while because the first time we heard his spruce rosewood we we're totally amazed. Pepe comes the islands to surf a few times a year and this time brought us two. Both sound perfect! just like that first one we heard, and we will soon give you sound samples.

This is a Tenor sized instrument with an Adirondack spruce top and rosewood sides and back. It has koa binding, a bone nut and saddle, and a hand rubbed French polish. This highly skilled type of finishing optimizes the vibration of the wood while still protecting it from the elements.

Custom Tenor from Renown Luthier- Pepe Romero

If you want the absolute best sounding ukulele being made, then you must consider a Pepe Romero. We have seen and played almost every maker out there, and we can confidently say that a Pepe Romero custom tenor, especially in this wood combination, is as good as it gets.

Of course tone is subjective and there are a few luthiers out there that produce on this level. But this ukulele has a high-fidelity response in a class of it's own. The crystal clear projection and resonance is reflective of the over $10,000 classical guitar market that Pepe is rooted in. This elite acoustic circle has praised Pepe's work for many years.

A little history for you- Pepe Romero Jr.  grew up in a musical family, to say the least. Pepe Romero Senior was and still is a famous classical guitarist.

For many premier acoustic builder's this is the most choice tonal combination. An Adirondack spruce for power and clarity, and a classic Rosewood for richness and depth. Another key feature to this ukulele is the hand rubbed French polish. This highly skilled finishing method optimizes the vibration of the wood while still protecting it from the elements.

Pepe comes to Hawaii to surf a few times a year and this time brought us two. Both sound perfect! just like that first one we heard!  We will soon give you sound samples.

This one pictured has a multi-level figuring found in the best exotic rosewoods. The strings on it in the picture are Koolau gold wound 3 and 4. We can string it however you would like.

As with all solid wood ukes from us, this comes with a Herco humidifier that you can upgrade to an Oasis humidifier if you live in a dry or cold climate. We can string this uke with any string you prefer. It comes from Pepe with LaBella strings.

If you are not familiar with PegHed tuners, these are actually not friction tuners, They are a 4:1 gear ratio and work incredibly smooth! On top of that they are very light for a wonderful balance. (not to mention the super cool vintage look!)

Extra Options

One of the options for this ukulele is to trade out the Herco, included humidifier, for the more expensive Oasis Ukulele Humidifier (OH-18). This is suggested if you live in a low humidity area.(parts of California, Nevada, Arizona, etc..) including cold winter areas if you are heating the air most of the day and night. For more info see our Ukulele Care link at the bottom of the site

Just note in the Special instructions if you would like different strings, low G, or even left-handed setup at no additional charge.

Setup Options

Current Turnaround Time: Amount of time it takes before shipment-

Full Setup: 10-14 Business Days

Basic Quality Control: 2-3 Days

BASIC QUALITY CONTROL covers inspecting the instrument for any major defects that would have been missed by the factory and any faults in construction that could potentially damage or limit the functionality of the instrument over time. Any defective instruments are rejected and replaced.  We make sure that each Ukulele meets the basic standard for a brand new instrument and will be ready to play once you receive it. A final cleanup is also included after inspection before packing and shipment.

Full Setup - FREE for all Ukuleles $399 and over / $20.00 for Ukuleles from $300-399 / $30.00 for Ukuleles Under $300

Includes:

-Overall QC evaluation: To find defects in construction as well as to get an overall view of the instrument and note the areas that need extra attention and adjustment during the setup.

-Saddle Adjustment: The height of the saddle is lowered to reduce the distance between the strings and the fretboard, making it easier to play than the factory setup, especially higher up the fretboard.

-Nut Slot Adjustment: The depth, width, and angle of the nut slots are adjusted to create a more comfortable playing experience especially on the lower frets.

-Fret Dressing: After adjusting the nut and saddle heights, high spots in the fretboard or uneven frets will potentially cause fret buzz, dead spots, or other unwanted problems. The frets are filed to create a more consistent level across the fretboard. We then crown the frets to return their rounded curvature back to the top of each fret creating a clear contact point for each string. We then smooth and polish the frets and condition the fingerboard to bring them back to new condition.

-Final Cleanup: We always do a final overall cleanup of the instrument to make sure it is in new condition and ready to play before it is prepared for shipment.

Rush Setup & Delivery - Additional $50.00
The RUSH SETUP AND DELIVERY service is for customers who would still like to receive everything included in the full setup but on a shorter time frame. One of our setup technicians will work overtime outside of normal business hours to complete the setup within 2-3 days of the order being placed and immediately hand it over to the shipping department for packing and shipment. The $50.00 rush charge is in addition to the cost of the full setup.

Additional services (see individual product listings to add these services to your order)
Re-stringing: We will replace the factory installed stock string set with a new set of your choosing. Select the “replace stock strings” option when adding your desired string set to the shopping cart.

Strap Button Installation: 1-2 buttons are installed to allow the use of a strap. Color options available.
